Instructions for use for Importal 1g/g bag (50x10 g)
Area of application
This medicine is a laxative, i.e. a laxative, and also serves as a liver therapeutic agent. The active ingredient lactitol monohydrate is used for the symptomatic treatment of stool constipation, which cannot be relieved by a diet rich in slag and other measures. It is also used for the symptomatic treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. No prescription is required for this product.
Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients
The medicine contains 10 g of Lactitol 1-water, which corresponds to 9.5 g of lactitol. In addition, 0.04 BE carbohydrates are included as an excipient.
Contraindications
The medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to lactitol. It should also not be used if the intestinal passage is not secured, such as an intestinal obstruction or an artificial anus, as the active ingredient develops its effect in the large intestine. In addition, it must not be taken if there are symptoms or suspicion of an organic disease of the gastrointestinal tract, unclear abdominal pain or blood in the stool. In case of galactose intolerance or galactosemia, a rare hereditary metabolic disease, its use is also contraindicated. The autosomal recessive hereditary fructose intolerance syndrome must be ruled out, especially in infants and small children, as this can lead to serious health problems. The medicine should also not be used if there are water and electrolyte imbalances or diarrhea.
Dosage
Always take the medicine exactly as described or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist. In the case of stool constipation, the dosage should be adjusted individually so that a bowel movement occurs once a day.Adults initially take 20g of powder daily, which is equivalent to two sachets, and if successful can reduce the dose to 10 to 15g daily.Children receive an average daily starting dose of 0.25 g per kilogram of body weight, depending on their weight. In hepatic encephalopathy, the dosage is adjusted so that loose stools occur twice daily. The starting dose is 0.5 to 0.7 g per kilogram of body weight daily, divided into three doses with meals. When taken by nasopharyngeal tube, the starting dose is 1 to 2 ml per kilogram of body weight of a 40% solution daily.
Treatment should not be continued for longer than four weeks without medical advice. In the event of an overdose, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur, requiring a dose reduction or discontinuation of the product. If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose, but continue using it as planned.Therapy should only be stopped after consulting your doctor.
Intake
For stool constipation, the preparation is taken once a day, in the morning or evening, with meals, preferably mixed with food or a drink. After taking it, you should drink one to two glasses of liquid. The laxative effect usually occurs a few hours after ingestion, but may be delayed by two to three days at the start of therapy. For hepatic encephalopathy, a 40% solution is prepared by dissolving 200 g of powder in hot distilled water and making up to 500 ml with water.
Patient information
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.Prolonged use of laxatives without interruption should be avoided. If you have chronic constipation, you should first aim for a high-fiber diet, adequate fluid intake or physical activity.Diarrhea can be a sign of overdose and should be treated by reducing the dose.In elderly or debilitated patients receiving long-term treatment, serum electrolyte concentrations should be determined regularly.During treatment, increased accumulation of hydrogen may occur in the intestines, so the intestines must be carefully cleaned before using electrocautery.Patients with nausea are recommended to take it with meals.A fecal impaction in the large intestine should primarily be treated with other means.Children should only receive the medicine after consulting a doctor.
The medicine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. This medicine, like all laxatives, should only be taken on medical advice, especially in the first three months of pregnancy. There are no studies on the passage into breast milk, but this appears to be of no clinical significance as only small amounts of the substance are absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream. The medicine may be used during breastfeeding.
Notes
Ask your doctor or pharmacy about risks and side effects.
Other
As with all laxatives, any existing water and electrolyte imbalances should be corrected before treatment begins. The medicine can also be administered in cases of diabetes. The tooth-damaging effect of the drug is negligible. If you alternate between loose stools and constipation, the cause should be clarified by your doctor before treatment with the medication. In the case of constipation, the aim is to pass soft stools once a day, or twice a day if the liver is undergoing connective tissue remodeling. In older or weakened patients receiving long-term treatment with the drug, blood values should be determined regularly.
