Areas of application
The isotonic saline solution 0.9% Bernburg is used for fluid and electrolyte replacement in hypochloremic alkalosis, chloride losses, short-term intravascular volume replacement, hypotonic dehydration and isotonic dehydration.
Contraindications
The solution must not be used in overwatering conditions (hyperhydration conditions).
Precautions for use
Particular caution is required in the case of reduced potassium content in the blood (hypokalemia), increased sodium content in the blood (hypernatremia), increased chloride content in the blood (hyperchloremia) and diseases that require restrictive sodium intake, such as heart failure, generalized edema, pulmonary edema, high blood pressure, eclampsia and severe renal insufficiency.

Warnings
Electrolyte and fluid status checks are required.
Dosage
The dosage usually depends on the fluid and electrolyte requirements, which in adults are around 40 ml/kg body mass/day or 2 mmol sodium/kg body mass/day.The maximum daily dose is determined by fluid and electrolyte requirements. For adults a value of 3-6 mmol sodium/kg body mass applies, for children it is 3-5 mmol sodium/kg body mass.In the case of hypertonic dehydration, an infusion rate that is too fast should be avoided at all costs.
Type of application
The solution is used for intravenous infusion.
Advice in case of overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include overhydration, increased sodium and chloride content of the blood (hypernatremia, hyperchloremia), hyperosmolarity and induction of an acidotic metabolic state. In the event of an overdose, the supply of the solution must be interrupted, accelerated elimination via the kidneys and the supply of the corresponding electrolytes reduced.
Side effects
Possible side effects include increased sodium and chloride levels in the blood (hypernatremia, hyperchloremia).
