Information for use with the article Oak bark tea: Oak bark tea is a herbal medicinal product used for diarrhoea, inflammation of the mouth and throat and for wound treatment. It is used internally for acute diarrhoea and mild inflammation of the mouth, throat, genital and anal areas. Externally, it is used to promote the formation of scabs in inflammatory skin diseases. If diarrhoea persists for more than 2 days or is accompanied by blood inclusions or temperature increases, a doctor should be consulted. For infants and small children, consultation with a doctor is always necessary. A doctor should also be consulted if symptoms in the mouth and throat persist for longer than a week, if symptoms recur or if the symptoms are unclear. In case of severe reddening of the wound edges or large, weeping or pus-infected wounds, medical advice is also required. The medicinal tea is prepared by infusing the oak bark. The dosage is one cup of tea twice a day for adolescents over 12 years of age and adults. For rinses, gargles and poultices, an infusion in the specified amount is recommended. Full and partial baths are prepared with an appropriate amount of tea. There are no known side effects. A doctor or pharmacist should be consulted if any disturbances of well-being occur during treatment. Oak bark tea must not be used if there is hypersensitivity to oak bark, in case of extensive skin damage or in pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 12 years of age.
