Instructions for use for Mezym F gastro-resistant tablets, 20 pcs
Description of the drug
Mezym F is a medicine that contains digestive enzymes from the pancreas of pigs. These enzymes are called pancreatic powder or pancreatin. The product is available without a prescription.
Areas of application
Mezym F is used to treat digestive disorders caused by reduced or absent pancreatic function. These disorders can occur, for example, due to diseases such as cystic fibrosis or chronic pancreatitis.
Active ingredients and ingredients
Each enteric-coated tablet of Mezym F contains 80 to 111,111 mg of porcine pancreas powder. The specific enzyme activities include:
10,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase, 7,500 Ph. Eur. units of amylase and 375 Ph. Eur. units of protease. The preparation also contains the following excipients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, highly disperse silicon dioxide, crospovidone type A, magnesium stearate (vegetable), hypromellose, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) dispersion 30% (Ph. Eur.), triethyl citrate, talc, simeticone emulsion 30%, macrogol6000, carmellose sodium (Ph. Eur.), polysorbate 80 (vegetable), azorubine (E 122), titanium dioxide and sodium hydroxide.
Contraindications
Mezym F must not be taken if you are allergic to pancreas powder, pork, azorubine (E 122) or any of the other ingredients of the medicine. Its use is also contraindicated in cases of acute inflammation of the pancreas or during an acute episode of chronic inflammation of the pancreas in the fully developed phase of the disease. However, in the decline phase during the dietary build-up (bland diet), it may occasionally make sense to take it.
Dosage and application
The recommended dose is 2 to 4 tablets per meal, equivalent to 20,000 to 40,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase per meal. The dosage depends on the severity of the indigestion and can therefore be higher. The dose should only be increased under medical supervision and should be aimed at improving symptoms such as fatty stools or abdominal pain.A daily enzyme dose of 15,000 to 20,000 units of lipase per kilogram of body weight should not be exceeded.Especially in patients with cystic fibrosis, the enzyme dose should not be higher than necessary for adequate fat absorption. The doctor should decide on the dosage for children.
The tablets should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid, preferably in the middle of the meal.Make sure to swallow the tablets whole, as the medicine loses its effect when chewed and the enzymes it contains can damage the mucous membrane if released into the oral cavity.Drinking plenty of fluids (water or juice) is recommended.
The duration of use is not subject to any restrictions and depends on the course of the disease, which is determined by the doctor. If you don't feel better or even feel worse, contact your doctor. Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of Mezym F is too strong or too weak.
Side effects and precautions
Like all medicines, Mezym F can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions such as rash, hives, sneezing, tearing, shortness of breath due to narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm), and shortness of breath. In patients with cystic fibrosis, narrowing of the small intestine/appendix region and the ascending sections of the large intestine have been described after administration of high doses of pancreas powder, which can potentially lead to intestinal obstruction.
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Mezym F if you experience intestinal obstruction-like symptoms. This medicine contains active enzymes that, when released into the oral cavity, can cause damage to the mucous membranes. Therefore, make sure to take Mezym F whole.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any medicines. There is no sufficient experience with the use of Mezym F in pregnant women. The possible risk to humans is unknown. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you should not take Mezym F unless your doctor considers it absolutely necessary.
Ability to drive and use machines
Mezym F has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Notes
In the case of cystic fibrosis, the amount of intake necessary for adequate fat digestion should not be exceeded. An increase in the amount taken should only be done under medical supervision and should be aimed at improving symptoms such as fat in the stool or abdominal pain.A daily intake of 15,000 to 20,000 units of the lipase contained per kg of body weight should not be exceeded. If you have cystic fibrosis, have your urine checked regularly to avoid the risk of uric acid stones forming.
