Mode of action

Nicotinell lozenges are available in two strengths: 1 mg and 2 mg.The choice of dosage depends on previous smoking habits.The 2 mg lozenges are suitable for smokers with a strong to very strong nicotine addiction (more than 30 cigarettes per day).For mild to moderate addiction (less than 20 cigarettes per day), the 1 mg lozenge is preferable.Smokers who have previously consumed between 20 and 30 cigarettes per day can choose both the 1 mg and 2 mg dosage, depending on their individual preferences.

Each lozenge contains 2 mg of nicotine, equivalent to 6.144 mg of nicotine bis[(R,R)-tartrat] 2 H2O.Other ingredients include maltitol (E 965), sodium carbonate, anhydrous, sodium hydrogen carbonate, polyacrylate dispersion 30%, xanthan gum, colloidal silicon dioxide, levomenthol, peppermint oil, aspartame (E 951) and magnesium stearate.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be used if you are hypersensitive to nicotine or any of the other ingredients of the preparation.It is not suitable for non-smokers.

Dosage

When using Nicotinell lozenges, the correct sucking technique is important.Suck a tablet until a strong taste appears.Then place the tablet between your cheek and gums until the taste fades.Repeat this process for about 30 minutes until the tablet is completely dissolved.Be sure to take breaks from sucking to ensure effectiveness.If you have a scratchy throat or a burning sensation in your stomach, sucking more slowly can help.

Intake

The lozenges are intended to be sucked and should not be swallowed.Suck a tablet until a strong taste appears.Then place the tablet between your gums and cheek.When the taste wears off, start sucking again.Repeat this process until the tablet has dissolved (approximately 30 minutes).

Patient information

Particular caution is required in the case of heart disease, high blood pressure, circulatory disorders, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, tumor of the adrenal gland, kidney or liver disease and inflammation of the esophagus, mouth or stomach.Nicotine is dangerous for children, so the medicine should be kept out of their reach.There is no evidence of risks when driving or operating machines as long as the lozenges are used in the recommended dosage.

Pregnancy

Smoking should be stopped during pregnancy as it can cause stunted growth, premature birth or stillbirth.Ideally, smoking should be stopped without medication.If this fails, Nicotinell can be recommended as support as the risk to the unborn child is lower than with continued smoking.Nicotine can harm the unborn child, so the product should only be used after consulting a healthcare professional or a doctor who specializes in smoking cessation.The drug should be avoided during breastfeeding as nicotine passes into breast milk.If use is recommended, the lozenges should only be taken after breastfeeding and not within 2 hours before breastfeeding.

Notes

Contains maltitol (E 965), levomenthol, peppermint oil and aspartame (E 951).Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the pack.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Other

The medicine is particularly suitable for very heavy smokers.Additional advice and supportive measures can increase success rates. Do not smoke before or during use.Coffee, acidic drinks or soda should not be drunk 15 minutes before or while sucking the medicine.
