Other

The medicine is not suitable for use in cases of vitamin E deficiency caused by impaired absorption of vitamin E from the intestine. The richest sources of vitamin E are grain germs and most vegetable oils.Other sources include leafy vegetables, animal organs, and milk and butter.

Estimating the supply of vitamin E is difficult, among other things, because of the widely varying vitamin E content of a particular food, up to fivefold seasonal fluctuations in milk, and losses through storage and the cooking process.According to the recommendation of the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the daily intake of vitamin E is 12 mg vitamin E (RRR-alpha-tocopherol equivalents).

During pregnancy and breastfeeding there is an additional requirement of 2 to 5 mg per day.Furthermore, the need for vitamin E increases with the amount of highly unsaturated fatty acids consumed.Vitamin E deficiency alone is rare in humans. The normal value in the blood for adults is around 9.5 mg/l vitamin E.

A deficiency can be caused by impaired absorption from the intestine, metabolism or increased consumption of the vitamin.A deficiency situation does not occur as a result of a nutritional deficiency, as a balanced mixed diet does not cause a vitamin E deficiency.Insufficient supply can occur after partial removal of the stomach, chronic small intestinal disease in adulthood (sprue), inflammation of the small and large intestine (enterocolitis), chronic inflammation of the pancreas, hereditary metabolic disease with the formation of thick mucus (cystic fibrosis), bile stasis, short bowel syndrome or after long-term nutrition by bypassing the stomach.

A vitamin E deficiency manifests itself in cell and tissue damage, especially in premature babies. If there is a vitamin E deficiency, the focus is on nerve and muscle failure.

Application

Adults take 1 capsule of Optovit® daily with a meal. The duration of intake depends on the course of the underlying disease. The soft capsules are swallowed whole with a little liquid.Due to its good tolerability, Optovit® fortissimum 500 can easily be taken over long periods of time.
