Area of application

Vitamin B12-ratiopharm N is a vitamin preparation that contains the active ingredient cyanocobalamin.It is used to treat vitamin B12 deficiency that cannot be corrected through diet.Such a deficiency can manifest itself in various clinical pictures, such as hyperchromic macrocytic megaloblastic anemia, also known as perniciosa or Biermer anemia, which is a disorder of the maturation of red blood cells.In addition, a vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to spinal funicular disease, which damages the spinal cord.

A vitamin B12 deficiency confirmed by laboratory diagnosis can occur after years of malnutrition and malnutrition, for example due to a strict vegetarian diet. Malabsorption, i.e. insufficient absorption of vitamin B12 in the intestine, can also have various causes.These include insufficient production of intrinsic factor, a protein that is formed in the stomach lining and is required for the absorption of vitamin B12.Diseases in the end section of the ileum, such as sprue, fish tapeworm infestation or blind loop syndrome, which can occur after stomach surgery, as well as congenital vitamin B12 transport disorders can also lead to a deficiency.

The active ingredient in Vitamin B12-ratiopharm N is cyanocobalamin.Each ampoule with 1 ml solution for injection contains 100 µg cyanocobalamin.The other ingredients are sodium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate and water for injections.

Contraindications

Vitamin B12-ratiopharm N must not be used if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to cyanocobalamin or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.

Dosage

Always use the product exactly as directed.Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose at the start of treatment is 1 ampoule daily (corresponding to 100 µg cyanocobalamin) in the first few weeks after diagnosis.If there is evidence of a vitamin B12 absorption disorder in the intestine, 1 ampoule (corresponding to 100 µg cyanocobalamin) is then administered once a month.

The preparation is intended for long-term use.Please consult your doctor about this.Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect is too strong or too weak.

Intake

Vitamin B12-ratiopharm N is usually administered intramuscularly, i.e. injected into a muscle.It can also be given slowly intravenously or subcutaneously, i.e. injected into a vein or under the skin.Infusion diluted in 250 ml of 0.9% saline solution is also possible.The mixture should always be freshly prepared.

Patient information

Keep the medicine out of the reach and reach of children.You must not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and the label after “Use by”.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.Store in the original packaging to protect the contents from light.

The shelf life after adding 1 ampoule of Vitamin B12-ratiopharm N diluted in 250 ml of 0.9% saline solution is 4 hours at 25 °C and room light.The mixture should always be fresh, i.e.h.only be prepared shortly before use.

Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater.Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicine when you no longer use it.In doing so, you contribute to protecting the environment.

Pregnancy

The recommended daily vitamin B12 intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding is 4 µg.According to previous experience, higher application doses have no adverse effects on the unborn child.Vitamin B12 is excreted in breast milk.
