What is this preparation?

This preparation contains a mixture of enzymes called pancreas powder or pancreatin.It is obtained from pig pancreas and supports digestion.The preparation consists of small enteric-coated microfilm tablets that slowly release the pancreas powder in the intestine.

What is this preparation used for?

The medicine is used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.The pancreas does not produce enough enzymes to digest food.It can be used on children, adolescents and adults.The dosage instructions for different age groups are explained in the “Dosage” category.

Treatment with this preparation improves the symptoms of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, including stool consistency (e.g. greasy stools), abdominal pain, flatulence and stool frequency (diarrhea or constipation).

How does the medicine work?

The enzymes in this supplement digest food as it passes through the intestines.It should be taken during or immediately after a meal or snack to allow the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food.

Active ingredients and ingredients

303.5 mg pancreas powder (porcine) with 36,000 Ph.Eur. units of triacylglycerol lipase, amylase and proteases.Excipients are microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, highly disperse silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer dispersion, polysorbate 80, water, triethyl citrate, talc, simeticon emulsion (contains simeticon, methylcellulose, sorbic acid and water), montan glycol wax, gelatin, titanium dioxide, iron oxides and hydroxides,sodium dodecyl sulfate and 23 mg total sodium ions.

Contraindications

The product must not be taken if you are allergic to pancreatin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Dosage

Always take this medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Your dosage is given in lipase units.The appropriate dose depends on the severity of your illness, your weight, your diet and the fat content in your stool.If you continue to have fatty stools or other gastrointestinal problems, talk to your doctor.

Different dosage instructions apply to children, adolescents and adults.The total daily dose should not exceed certain limits.If you overdose, drink plenty of water and talk to your doctor.Forgotten doses should not be made up.Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor.

Intake

Always take the medicine during or immediately after a meal or snack.Swallow the capsules whole with sufficient liquid.Do not crush or chew the capsules as this may cause mouth irritation or change how they work.If swallowing is difficult, you can carefully open the capsules and swallow the microfilm-coated tablets whole with liquid.Be careful not to leave any microfilm tablets in your mouth.

Patient information

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.A rare intestinal disorder called fibrosing colonopathy may occur in patients with cystic fibrosis.Allergic reactions should be treated immediately.Mouth irritation can be relieved by rinsing and drinking water.

The medicine has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

Before taking this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or planning to have a baby.Your doctor will decide whether you can take the product during pregnancy.It can be used during breastfeeding.

Other

In cystic fibrosis, the formation of narrowings in the gastrointestinal tract may occur after taking large amounts of the drug.Increased uric acid excretion in the urine should be controlled to avoid the formation of uric acid stones.If symptoms are similar to those of an intestinal obstruction, the possibility of intestinal strictures should also be taken into account.
