Instructions for use for ACICLOVIR AL Cream, 2 g

ACICLOVIR AL Cream - For cold sores

ACICLOVIR AL Cream is used to relieve pain and itching in frequently recurring herpes infections with blisters in the lip area (recurrent herpes labialis). The active ingredient of the drug inhibits the multiplication of herpes viruses (virustatik). No prescription is required for this product.

Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients

ACICLOVIR AL Cream contains the following active ingredients and excipients: 50 mg acyclovir, 15 mg cetyl alcohol, dimeticone, macrogol glycerol stearate, thick paraffin, 150 mg propylene glycol, white petroleum jelly and purified water.

Area of application

ACICLOVIR AL Cream is used to relieve pain and itching in frequently recurring herpes infections with blisters in the lip area (recurrent herpes labialis). The active ingredient of the drug inhibits the multiplication of herpes viruses (virtatic).

Application

ACICLOVIR AL Cream is applied thinly to the infected skin areas 5 times a day, every 4 hours during the day.To avoid contact with the infectious blisters, it is recommended to apply the cream with a cotton swab. Not only the directly visible areas of skin (redness, swelling, blisters), but also the adjacent areas should be treated. If the application is done by hand, it should be washed thoroughly before and after.

Dosage

The duration of treatment is generally 5 days.If the skin symptoms worsen during treatment or if the blisters have not crusted over or healed after 10 days of treatment at the latest, the treatment should be stopped and a doctor should be consulted.

For frequently recurring cold sores

Cold sores (herpes labialis) are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), especially type 1 (HSV-1, more rarely HSV-2).The virus cannot be cured and remains in the body for life. After the initial infection, which usually occurs in childhood and is often asymptomatic, the viruses remain in the ganglia (collection of nerve cell bodies). There they evade the immune system's grasp and remain in a resting state.Certain triggers (triggering stimuli) lead to reactivation, which can be triggered several times throughout the year. The viruses migrate to the surface of the skin and cause painful cold sores at the transition between the lip and facial skin. ACICLOVIR AL Cream can relieve pain and itching caused by cold sores.

Targeted against viruses

Cold sores are treated with herpes-specific antiviral medications (viral statics), which directly interfere with the reproduction mechanisms of the viruses.Virus replication is selectively prevented.Acyclovir is activated primarily in cells infected with the herpes virus.

Early treatment is important

It is advisable that those affected use the cream as soon as they feel a slight tingling or tickling sensation. The virus multiplies mainly in the first 48 hours.By applying ACICLOVIR AL cream early, virus proliferation can be specifically combated and contained.

Hygiene - avoid transmission

The viruses are found directly on the infected area, but also in saliva.Infection with cold sores usually occurs through direct transmission from one person to another.Indirect infection via infected objects such as glasses, cutlery and napkins is also possible.Particular attention must be paid to hygiene measures such as frequent hand washing.

Recognize and avoid triggers

People react very differently to external stimuli.Self-observation is important to capture the individual and reactivating factors. In general, UV-radiation, climate changes, mental stress, exhaustion, small skin injuries, hormonal changes, flu infections and fever are among the possible trigger factors.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

What are the typical signs of cold sores?

Herpes often announces itself before the actual outbreak.Typical early signs include feelings of tension and numbness, tingling and itching, stinging and burning and redness of the skin in the affected area.

How long can ACICLOVIR AL cream be used?

Generally the treatment duration is 5 days. After 10 days of treatment at the latest, the blisters should have crusted over or healed. If this is not the case, the treatment should be stopped and a doctor should be consulted. This also applies if the skin symptoms worsen during treatment.

Are there warnings and precautions to be observed?

ACICLOVIR AL Cream must not be applied to mucous membranes (e.g. B. in the oral cavity, on the eyes or in the vagina), otherwise local irritation is to be expected.Patients with a severe disorder of the body's immune system (e.g. AIDS or after bone marrow transplants) should consult a doctor before treatment. The active ingredient acyclovir is hardly absorbed by the body after it is applied to the skin. Therefore, the dose that the nursing child would absorb during breastfeeding is low.Breastfeeding women should ensure that the breastfed child does not come into contact with the treated areas of the body.During pregnancy, you should consult a doctor before starting treatment.

Contraindications

The product should not be used if you are known to be hypersensitive to acyclovir, valacyclovir or any of the other ingredients.

Patient information

To date, no effects on the ability to drive or use machines have been reported.

Pregnancy

The preparation should only be used during pregnancy after careful risk-benefit assessment. Therefore, please speak to a doctor before using the medicine. ACICLOVIR AL Cream is hardly absorbed by the body after external application on healthy skin. The dose that a child would receive through breastfeeding after the mother has used the medicine is therefore small. If the product is used during breastfeeding, contact of the breastfed child with the treated areas of the body should be avoided.

Notes

In order to achieve the greatest possible treatment success, the cream should be used at the first signs of herpes disease (burning, itching, feeling of tension and redness). If the skin changes are severe and pustules or crusts are already present, virus-suppressing treatment with acyclovir is no longer useful.
