Area of application

Kalinor effervescent tablets are used to replace potassium in various conditions.These include a pronounced reduction in the blood potassium concentration, especially if there is simultaneous metabolic acidosis, as well as potassium deficiency-related disorders of nerve and muscle activity or cardiac arrhythmias.The product can also be used if the blood potassium concentration is reduced during treatment with cardiac medications containing digitalis.Kalinor is also suitable for preventing a reduction in the blood potassium concentration in ketoacidosis, for example in diabetes, and for preventing new kidney stone formation in the case of calcium stones or insufficient citrate excretion.No prescription is required for this product.

One effervescent tablet contains 2.17 g potassium citrate 1-water, 2.05 g potassium citrate, 2.057 g citric acid (anhydrous), 2 g potassium hydrogen carbonate and the excipients glucose solution, macrogol 6000, saccharin, sucrose and lemon flavor.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken for diseases that are often associated with an increase in blood potassium levels above the norm.These include dehydration, impaired excretory renal function, Addison's disease and adynamia episodica hereditaria.

Dosage

Unless otherwise instructed, 1 to 3 effervescent tablets should be taken daily.The dosage depends on the potassium loss to be compensated.In the case of potassium-related disorders of nerve and muscle activity or cardiac arrhythmias, as well as to avoid or compensate for low blood potassium concentrations, 40 to 80 mmol of potassium per day should generally be sufficient.The single dose should not be more than 40 mmol potassium, corresponding to 1 effervescent tablet.To prevent new kidney stone formation, the dosage should be chosen so that citrate excretion is greater than 320 mg daily and a urine pH of 6.2 to 6.8 is achieved.This can be achieved by administering 1 to 2 effervescent tablets per day.The daily dose should not exceed 4 effervescent tablets.The duration of treatment depends on the cause of the potassium deficiency or the prevention of a new illness with kidney stones.

Intake

Completely dissolve an effervescent tablet in a glass of water (100-200 ml) and drink the solution in sips over 10-15 minutes.Taking it with a meal improves tolerance.A daily dose of 2 or more effervescent tablets should be taken throughout the day.

Patient information

The effervescent tablets should only be used with caution in sickle cell anemia or during simultaneous treatment with certain medications.Before use, the state of the mineral and acid-base balance, the heart rhythm and, especially in older patients, the kidney function must be checked.These values should be monitored initially at shorter intervals and later at longer intervals during treatment.Frequent and prolonged use of Kalinor effervescent tablets can be harmful to your teeth.Taking it has no harmful effects on your ability to drive, react or act in general.

There are no known indications of harmful effects during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Notes

Before use, blood salts, heart rhythm and kidney function should be checked.If severe nausea, severe vomiting, severe abdominal pain or flatulence, diarrhea and gastrointestinal bleeding occur during treatment with potassium preparations, the medication should be discontinued immediately.
