Information for use with the article Valerian tincture: Valerian tincture is used for the treatment of restlessness and nervous sleep disorders. The tincture consists of 100 g tincture of valerian root (in a ratio of 1:5) and contains 70% ethanol as extracting agent. It should not be used by alcoholics and should only be used by people with liver disease, epilepsy or brain damage after consulting a doctor. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children should also not take the tincture. There are no known interactions with other medicines. The dosage is 4 teaspoonfuls 2-3 times a day for sedative purposes and 1 teaspoonful before bedtime for sleep disorders. Alcohol intoxication may occur, therefore the maximum recommended dosage should not be exceeded. Reactivity may be impaired. Side effects are not known so far. The duration of use depends on the symptoms. One pack contains 50 ml. The medicine should be kept away from light and out of the reach of children. The tincture is available without a prescription.
