Retterspitz laxative powder is a saline laxative used for constipation and for emptying the bowels before diagnostic and therapeutic measures. The active ingredient in Retterspitz laxative powder is magnesium sulphate heptahydrate. Adults take two to three teaspoons of Retterspitz Laxative Powder in about 200 ml of water in the morning, and the laxative effect sets in after about eight to ten hours. Retterspitz Laxative Powder must not be used in cases of intestinal obstruction, impaired kidney function, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and disorders of the water and electrolyte balance. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use. There may be interactions with certain medicinal products, such as tetracyclines or cardiac glycosides. Retterspitz Laxative Powder should only be used for a short time, as prolonged use may increase constipation. In case of overdose, water and electrolyte disorders as well as magnesium poisoning may occur. Possible side effects are central nervous disorders, muscle weakness, fatigue and cardiac arrhythmia.
