Macrogol HEXAL plus electrolytes is a laxative used to treat constipation in adults, adolescents and elderly patients. It contains the active ingredient macrogol 3350 and electrolytes such as sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate and potassium chloride. The medicine softens the stool, making it easier to pass, while the electrolytes maintain normal salt levels in the body. Use in children under 12 years of age is not recommended. The dosage and directions for use state that 1 sachet should be dissolved in 125 ml of water and taken 1-3 times daily, depending on the severity of the constipation. Treatment usually lasts about 2 weeks, but may be longer for certain conditions. The solution should be used within 24 hours and stored in the refrigerator. The medicine should not be used in case of contraindications such as hypersensitivity to ingredients, intestinal obstruction or certain intestinal diseases. Possible side effects may include gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or flatulence. The medicine should be kept away from heat and out of reach of children.
