Why vitamin D?

Vitamin D, also known as calcitriol, plays a crucial role in the formation and maturation of bone stem cells.It regulates the absorption of calcium in the intestines and promotes the mineralization of bones, making them hard and strong.Calcium and phosphate are also essential for healthy teeth.Vitamin D, often referred to as the sunshine vitamin, is particularly important in the winter and dark months because the body produces it through sunlight.It supports the muscles in absorbing proteins and calcium, which promotes muscle building.Vitamin D also strengthens and controls the immune system, promotes the release of antibodies and helps prevent chronic inflammation.

Areas of application

VIGANTOL 500 IU vitamin D3 tablets are used to prevent rickets, both in premature babies and in children with an apparent risk of vitamin D deficiency.They also support the treatment of osteoporosis in adults.In our latitudes, vitamin D deficiency is widespread and it is difficult to cover daily requirements through food alone.In most cases, one tablet VIGANTOL per day is sufficient to support the vitamin D balance.

Active ingredients and ingredients

Each tablet contains 12.5 µg colecalciferol, equivalent to 500 IU vitamin D3.Other ingredients include alpha-tocopherol, carboxymethyl starch sodium salt type C, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, corn starch, mannitol, sodium ascorbate, sucrose, colloidal silicon dioxide, modified starch, talc and medium-chain triglycerides.

Contraindications

VIGANTOL 500 IU must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients of the drug.Its use is also contraindicated in cases of hypercalcemia (increased calcium concentration in the blood) and hypercalciuria (increased calcium concentration in the urine).

Dosage

The usual dose to prevent rickets is one tablet daily.Two tablets daily may be recommended for premature babies.To prevent the risk of vitamin D deficiency, one tablet is also taken daily.Two tablets are provided daily to support the treatment of osteoporosis.During long-term treatment, blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored regularly.

Intake

Adults can take the tablets with enough water.For infants and young children, the tablet should be dissolved in water or milk and placed directly in the mouth.It is not recommended to mix the tablets with food as complete intake cannot be guaranteed.

Patient information

Particular caution is required if there is a tendency to form calcium-containing kidney stones, impaired excretion of calcium and phosphate via the kidneys, treatment with benzothiadiazine derivatives and in immobilized patients.In cases of sarcoidosis, pseudohypoparathyroidism and impaired renal function, the effect on calcium and phosphate balance should be monitored.Infants and young children should use the tablets with particular caution.

Pregnancy

Daily doses of up to 500 IU are safe during pregnancy.Long-term overdoses should be avoided as they can lead to hypercalcemia and associated complications.During breastfeeding, vitamin D and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk, but an overdose in infants has not been observed.
