Why vitamin D?

Vitamin D, also known as calcitriol, is essential for the formation and maturation of bone stem cells.It regulates the absorption of calcium in the intestines and promotes the mineralization of bones, making them hard and strong.Calcium and phosphate, which are incorporated by vitamin D, are also important for strong teeth.Vitamin D intake is particularly important in the winter and dark months, as it is then more difficult to get enough sunlight.

Areas of application

VIGANTOL 500 IU vitamin D3 tablets are used to prevent rickets, a calcification disorder of the skeleton during growth.This also applies to premature babies.It also serves as prevention if there is a recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy people without absorption disorders.It is also used to support the treatment of osteoporosis, the breakdown of bone tissue.

Ingredients

Each tablet contains 12.5 µg colecalciferol, which corresponds to 500 IU vitamin D3.Other ingredients include alpha-tocopherol, carboxymethyl starch sodium salt type C, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, corn starch, mannitol, sodium ascorbate, sucrose, colloidal silicon dioxide, modified starch, talc and medium-chain triglycerides.

Dosage and intake

The usual dose to prevent rickets is one tablet daily, equivalent to 500 IU of vitamin D. Two tablets daily are recommended for premature babies.To prevent vitamin D deficiency, one tablet is also taken daily.Two tablets are necessary daily to support the treatment of osteoporosis.

The tablets should be taken with sufficient water.For infants and young children, the tablet can be dissolved in water or milk and then given.It is recommended not to add the tablet to bottled or porridge meals to ensure complete intake.

Special Notes

VIGANTOL 500 IU must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients.The preparation should also not be used in cases of hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria.No prescription is required for this product.

Particular caution is required when taking it if you are prone to the formation of calcium-containing kidney stones, have impaired excretion of calcium and phosphate via the kidneys, are being treated with benzothiadiazine derivatives or are immobilized.In these cases, blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy, daily doses over 500 IU should only be taken according to strict indications.Overdoses must be prevented as they can lead to physical and mental disabilities as well as congenital heart and eye diseases in the child.During breastfeeding, vitamin D and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk, but an overdose in infants has not been observed.
