Areas of application

VIGANTOL 1000 IU vitamin D3 tablets are used to prevent rickets, both in premature babies and in growing children.It also serves as prevention if there is a recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy people without absorption disorders.A deficiency can manifest itself in symptoms such as fatigue, listlessness and susceptibility to infections.In addition, it is used to support the treatment of osteoporosis in adults.

1 Tablet contains 25 µg colecalciferol, equivalent to 1000 IU vitamin D3.Other ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, carboxymethyl starch sodium (type C), talc, magnesium stearate, sodium ascorbate, medium-chain triglycerides, microcrystalline cellulose, mannitol, modified starch, sucrose and alpha-tocopherol.

Dosage

The recommended dose to prevent rickets is ½ tablet VIGANTOL 1000 IU daily (corresponding to 0.0125 mg or 500 IU vitamin D).To prevent rickets in premature babies, 1 tablet VIGANTOL 1000 IU (corresponding to 0.025 mg or 1000 IU vitamin D) is recommended daily.For prevention if there is a recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency, ½ tablet VIGANTOL 1000 IU daily (corresponding to 0.0125 mg or 500 IU vitamin D).To support the treatment of osteoporosis, 1 tablet VIGANTOL 1000 IU daily (corresponding to approx. 0.025 mg or 1000 IU vitamin D).

During long-term treatment with VIGANTOL 1000 IU, blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored regularly and renal function should be checked by measuring serum creatinine.If necessary, a dose adjustment should be made according to the blood calcium values.

Intake

The tablets should be taken with sufficient water.For infants and young children, the tablet can be dissolved on a teaspoon or in a small transparent container in approx. 5-10 ml of water.The tablet takes some time to disintegrate (at least 2 minutes).Then give the dissolved tablet directly into the child's mouth, ideally during a meal.Adding the tablets to a bottle or porridge meal for infants is not recommended, as complete intake cannot be guaranteed.

Infants receive VIGANTOL 1000 IU from the second week of life until the end of the first year of life.Further doses of VIGANTOL 1000 IU are recommended in the second year of life, especially during the winter months.It may only be used on newborns and infants under medical supervision.The specified dosage must not be exceeded.

Contraindications

VIGANTOL 1000 IU must not be taken if you are allergic to colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, if you suffer from hypercalcaemia (increased calcium concentration in the blood) and/or if you have hypercalciuria (increased calcium concentration in the urine).

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking it if there is a tendency to form calcium-containing kidney stones, if the excretion of calcium and phosphate is impaired by the kidneys, if treated with benzothiadiazine derivatives, in immobilized patients, in sarcoidosis, in pseudohypoparathyroidism and in patients with impaired kidney function.Infants and young children should use the product with particular caution.

Pregnancy

To date, no risks are known in the specified dose range.Long-term overdoses of vitamin D must be prevented during pregnancy, as the resulting hypercalcemia can lead to physical and mental disability as well as congenital heart and eye diseases in the child.During pregnancy, Vigantoletten 1000 IU should only be taken according to strict indications and only in the dosage that is absolutely necessary to correct the deficiency.

Vitamin D and its metabolites pass into breast milk.An overdose in infants caused in this way has not been observed.If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
