Areas of application

VIGANTOL 1000 IU is used to prevent rickets, both in premature babies and in growing children.It also serves as prevention if there is a recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy people without absorption disorders.A deficiency can manifest itself in symptoms such as fatigue, listlessness and susceptibility to infections.In addition, it is used to support the treatment of osteoporosis in adults.

1 Tablet contains 25 µg colecalciferol, equivalent to 1000 IU vitamin D3.Other ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, carboxymethyl starch sodium (type C), talc, magnesium stearate, sodium ascorbate, medium-chain triglycerides, microcrystalline cellulose, mannitol, modified starch, sucrose and alpha-tocopherol.

Dosage

The recommended dose to prevent rickets is ½ tablet VIGANTOL 1000 IU daily (corresponding to 0.0125 mg or 500 IU vitamin D).For prevention if there is a recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency, ½ tablet daily is also recommended.To support the treatment of osteoporosis, 1 tablet should be taken daily.For daily doses above 500 IU, calcium levels in the blood and urine should be monitored regularly.

Intake

The tablets should be taken with sufficient water.For infants and young children, the tablet should be dissolved in water on a teaspoon or in a small container and then given directly into the child's mouth.Adding the tablets to a bottle or porridge meal is not recommended as complete intake cannot be guaranteed.

Contraindications

VIGANTOL 1000 IU must not be taken if you are allergic to colecalciferol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, or if you suffer from hypercalcemia (increased calcium concentration in the blood) and/or hypercalciuria (increased calcium concentration in the urine).

Patient information

Particular caution is required when taking it if there is a tendency to form calcium-containing kidney stones, impaired excretion of calcium and phosphate via the kidneys, treatment with benzothiadiazine derivatives, immobilized patients, sarcoidosis, pseudohypoparathyroidism and impaired kidney function.Infants and young children should use the product with particular caution.

Pregnancy

Daily doses of up to 500 IU are safe during pregnancy.Overdoses of vitamin D during pregnancy must be prevented, as long-term hypercalcemia can lead to physical and mental disability as well as congenital heart and eye diseases in the child.During breastfeeding, vitamin D and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk, but an overdose in infants has not been observed.
