Septanasal® is a nasal spray that is used to reduce the swelling of the nasal mucosa when you have a cold.The active ingredient xylometazoline constricts the vessels in the nose and causes the nasal mucosa to become swollen.Dexpanthenol supports wound healing and protects the mucous membranes.It promotes the healing of nasal skin damage and can be used as a supplement after surgical procedures on the nose.

No prescription is required for this product.

Area of application

The nasal spray is used to reduce the swelling of the nasal mucosa in the event of inflammation of the nasal mucosa (cold) and to support the healing of mucous membrane lesions.It also relieves non-allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa (vasomotor rhinitis) and can be used on medical advice to treat difficult breathing through the nose after nasal surgery.

The medicine is intended for adults and children aged 6 years and over.

Active ingredients per 1 ml spray (= 10 sprays): 1 mg xylometazoline hydrochloride and 50 mg dexpanthenol.Other ingredients include potassium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate-12 water and water for injections.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be used if you or your child are allergic to xylometazoline hydrochloride, dexpanthenol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.Its use is also not permitted in the case of dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa with crust formation (dry runny nose) or after surgical procedures in which the pituitary gland was removed or the meninges were exposed.

This medicine must not be used in children under 6 years of age.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described or exactly as discussed with your doctor or pharmacist.Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

For adults and adolescents (over 12 years of age), the recommended dose is one spray into each nostril up to 3 times daily as needed.The dosage depends on individual sensitivity and clinical effect.Talk to your doctor if you don't feel better or feel worse after 7 days.The duration of use is limited to 7 days.Reapplication should only be carried out after a break of several days.

For children over 6 years of age, the recommended dose is one spray into each nostril up to 3 times daily as needed.Talk to your doctor if symptoms persist after 3 days.

Long-term use and overdose of this drug can lead to chronic swelling of the nasal mucosa and a decrease in the thickness of the nasal mucosa (damage).

Intake

Before the first use and after a longer treatment break, the pump should be activated 5 times until a fine spray mist is released.The tip of the spray head should be inserted as vertically as possible into the nostril and the spray head should be pumped once.During the spraying process, the patient should breathe calmly through the nose.If necessary, the procedure should be repeated for the other nostril.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using the product if you or your child are being treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or other medicines that may potentially increase blood pressure.If you have increased intraocular pressure (glaucoma), severe diseases of the cardiovascular system, a tumor of the adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma), metabolic disorders or a metabolic disease known as porphyria, you should consult before use.

Due to the shrinkage of the nasal mucosa, it may only be used for chronic colds under medical supervision.Incorrect use or overdose can lead to undesirable effects throughout the entire organism, especially in children.

The use of this medicine is not recommended if you or your child are already taking flu medicines or cough and cold medicines containing sympathomimetics.Using these medicines together with the product may increase the risk of adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and central nervous system.

Avoid direct contact of this medicine with the eyes.

The medicine is only suitable for use in children aged 6 years and over.Other strengths of this medicine with lower concentrations of the active ingredient xylometazoline hydrochloride are available for children under 6 years of age. You should monitor the use of this medicine in children under 12 years of age.If your child does not feel better after 3 days or even feels worse, please contact a doctor.

When used as intended, no impairment of the ability to drive or operate machines is expected.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Due to a lack of safety data in pregnancy, this medicine should not be used by pregnant women.Since it is not known whether xylometazoline hydrochloride is excreted in breast milk, this medicine should not be used during breast-feeding.
