What is an allergy and how does it occur?

In the case of an allergy, our body's immune system reacts defensively to foreign substances that actually do not pose a health risk, such as pollen, house dust mites or animal hair.In order to get rid of these allergens, certain cells of the body's defense system, so-called mast cells, release the messenger substance histamine.This histamine is responsible for allergic symptoms.

Symptoms of an allergy

An allergy usually manifests itself through typical symptoms that can occur individually or together and to varying degrees.These include, among other things, itchy nose, runny nose, watery and burning eyes, fatigue, lack of concentration or shortness of breath.

How does Azedil® work?

With the proven active ingredient azelastine, Azedil® blocks histamine (antihistamine), at the same time stabilizes the mast cells and has an anti-inflammatory effect.With its rapid action, Azedil® is suitable for treating acute hay fever symptoms of the eyes and nose.For a 24-hour effect, Azedil® only needs to be used twice a day.

Treat hay fever early

The symptoms of hay fever should be treated early.Otherwise there is a risk that the allergy will spread from the nose to the deeper respiratory tract.This can develop into chronic bronchitis or allergic asthma.Doctors refer to this as a “floor change.”Early treatment can specifically counteract hay fever and noticeably improve quality of life.

Area of application

Azedil® eye drops are approved for the treatment and prevention of the symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis in adults, adolescents and children aged 4 years and older.They can also be used to treat the symptoms of non-seasonal (perennial) allergic conjunctivitis in adults and adolescents aged 12 and over.

Azedil® 0.5 mg/ml eye drops contain azelastine hydrochloride as the active ingredient.1 ml solution contains 0.5 mg azelastine hydrochloride.Each drop contains 0.015 mg azelastine hydrochloride.The other ingredients are benzalkonium chloride, sodium edetate (Ph.Eur.), Hypromellose 4000, sorbitol solution 70% (crystallizing) (Ph.Eur.), sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment and water for injection purposes.

Contraindications

Azedil® must not be used if you are allergic to azelastine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.Please remember not to use Azedil® for longer than 6 weeks.Azedil® may only be instilled into the eyes.

Dosage

Azedil® is used as follows: For eye problems caused by hay fever (seasonal allergic conjunctivitis), the usual dose is one drop in each eye in the morning and evening.If you expect to come into contact with flower pollen, you can use the usual dose as a preventative measure before leaving the house.For eye problems caused by an allergy (non-seasonal [perenniale] allergic conjunctivitis), the usual dose is one drop in each eye morning and evening.

Intake

So that you can instill the eye drops correctly, you should sit in front of a mirror the first few times so that you can see what you are doing better.Wash your hands.Use a cloth to lightly wipe your eyes to remove moisture.Unscrew the bottle and check that the dropper is clean.Gently pull the lower eyelid down.Carefully drip the drop into the center of the lower eyelid.Be careful not to let the dropper touch your eye.Release your lower eyelid and press lightly against your nose from the inner corner of your eye.Continue to press your finger against your nose while blinking slowly several times to spread the drop over the eyeball.Then remove excess eye drops with a cloth.Repeat the process for the other eye.

Patient information

Take special care when using the medicine if you are not sure whether your eye problems are due to an allergy. Especially if only one eye is affected, if your vision is impaired, or if the eye hurts and you have no nose symptoms, there is a possibility that it is more of an inflammation than an allergy.If the symptoms worsen despite treatment with the medicine or persist for more than 48 hours without noticeable improvement, please contact your doctor or pharmacy.

Before using the eye drops, ask your doctor, pharmacist or optician if you are taking other non-prescription medicines or if you wear contact lenses.

Your vision may be affected for a short time after using the eye drops.In this case, wait until you can see clearly again before actively driving or operating machines.

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
