Loperamid axicur® with the proven active ingredient loperamide hydrochloride provides quick help for acute diarrhea.The intestinal activity can be calmed and the frequency of bowel movements can be reduced.Loperamid axicur® can be used for adults and adolescents aged 12 and over.It may only be taken for longer than 2 days as prescribed by a doctor.No prescription is required for this product.

Area of application

Loperamide is an anti-diarrheal medication.It is used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and adolescents aged 12 and over if no causal therapy is available.Treatment longer than 2 days may only be carried out under medical prescription and follow-up monitoring.

Each tablet contains 2 mg of loperamide hydrochloride, equivalent to 1.86 mg of loperamide.The preparation also contains lactose-1 water, corn starch and magnesium stearate (vegetable) as excipients.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to loperamide hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients.Children under 12 years of age are also not allowed to use the product.Furthermore, it is not suitable for conditions in which a slowing of intestinal activity must be avoided, such as bloated stomach, constipation and intestinal obstruction.Loperamide must also not be used in cases of diarrhea that is accompanied by fever and/or bloody stools.The same applies to diarrhea that occurs during or after taking antibiotics (pseudomembranous colitis), as well as to chronic diarrhea and acute attacks of ulcerative colitis.These diseases may only be treated with loperamide if prescribed by a doctor.Children under 2 years of age must not be treated with medicines containing loperamide.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as directed.Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for adults is 2 tablets at the start of treatment, then 1 tablet after each unformed stool.The maximum daily dose is 6 tablets.Adolescents aged 12 and over take 1 tablet at the start of treatment and after each unformed stool.The maximum daily dose for adolescents is 4 tablets.The recommended maximum daily dose must not be exceeded.Do not take the medicine for more than 2 days without medical advice.If diarrhea persists after 2 days of treatment, the medicine must be stopped and a doctor consulted.Treatment longer than 2 days may only be carried out under medical prescription and follow-up monitoring.

If you take more than you should, see a doctor as soon as possible, especially if you experience unusual symptoms.In the event of an overdose, constipation, urinary retention, intestinal obstruction and symptoms of central nervous system intoxication may occur.Treatment depends on the overdose symptoms and the clinical picture.The opioid antagonist naloxone can be used as an antidote under medical supervision.In order to remove any remaining active ingredients in the stomach, gastric lavage may be performed.

If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose.If you have any further questions about using the medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacy.

Intake

Please take the tablets whole with sufficient liquid, preferably a glass of water.

Patient information

Children under 2 years of age must not be treated with medicines containing loperamide.Children between the ages of 2 and 12 may only be treated with medicines containing loperamide as prescribed by a doctor.Due to the high active ingredient content, the preparation is not suitable for this age group.Other dosage forms are available for this as prescribed by a doctor.

Take special care if you have AIDS and are taking the medicine to treat diarrhea.You should stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor at the first sign of abdominal distention.Even if you have liver disease, you should consult your doctor before taking it, as the medicine may only be used according to a doctor's prescription.Make sure you replace fluid and salts (electrolytes) adequately, as diarrhea can lead to large losses of fluid and salt.This is especially true for children.

The medicine stops the diarrhea but does not correct the cause.If possible, the cause should also be treated.Therefore, talk to your doctor.The recommended dosage and duration of use of 2 days must not be exceeded because severe constipation can occur.If diarrhea persists after 2 days of treatment, the medicine must be stopped and a doctor consulted.

Tiredness, dizziness and sleepiness may occur if you have diarrhea or as a result of taking the medicine.Therefore, caution is advised when driving or working with machines.

Pregnancy

Before taking/using any medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacy for advice.Although no clear evidence of a teratogenic effect has been found in a limited number of women who took the active ingredient of the drug during pregnancy, you should not use the drug during pregnancy.Since small amounts of the active ingredient can pass into breast milk, you should not use the medicine if you are breastfeeding.
