Supplementary folic acid intake increases folate levels in pregnant women.Low folate levels in pregnant women are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the growing fetus.The positive effect occurs with a supplementary intake of 400 µg folic acid daily for a period of at least one month before and up to three months after conception.However, neural tube defects can also have causes other than an inadequate supply of folic acid.Increasing folate levels cannot always prevent the development of neural tube defects.
