Zinc is a vital trace element that is needed in the body for a variety of functions. It is a component of enzymes and other proteins such as hormones and transport proteins.Zinc is essential for the reading of genetic information, the formation of new body cells and has antioxidant properties. It plays an important role in the immune system, skin, hair and mucous membrane health, wound healing, fertility and sensory functions.Zinc is also required for the storage and release of insulin from the pancreas.
Symptoms of zinc deficiency
A zinc deficiency can manifest itself in a wide variety of symptoms.Typical signs of illness are a weakened immune system, increased susceptibility to infections, inflammation in the mouth area, cracks in the corners of the mouth, smell and taste disorders, wounds that heal poorly, dry and flaky skin, inflammatory reddened skin, nail changes, dull hair, hair loss, depression, mood swings, underdevelopment of the sexual organs, reduced fertility, potency disorders, difficulty concentrating, growth disorders in children and disorders of glucose metabolism.
Causes of zinc deficiency
The zinc balance depends on four factors: intake, requirement, loss and rate of absorption from the intestine.A deficiency occurs when not enough zinc is supplied, there is an increased need, the body excretes too much zinc due to illness or stress, or the absorption of the mineral into the body is disturbed. An unbalanced diet, vegetarian or vegan diet, increased zinc losses due to skin diseases or medications and impaired absorption due to intestinal diseases or high alcohol consumption can lead to a zinc deficiency.
