Valerian tincture Herbeta DAB 8 is a herbal medicinal product for sedation. It is used for the treatment of restlessness and nervous sleep disorders. It is important to note that the medicine has a high alcohol content of 66% by volume. However, there are some restrictions on the use of valerian tincture. It should not be used by persons suffering from alcoholism. Liver patients, epileptics, brain patients or brain-damaged persons should consult a doctor before use. There are also insufficient studies on the use of valerian tincture in pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 12 years of age, so it should be avoided by this group of people. There are no known interactions with other medicines. However, it is important to note that the effect of other medicines may be impaired or enhanced by the high alcohol content. The recommended dosage for valerian tincture is 1/2 teaspoonful (approx. 1.5 ml) 2 to 3 times a day for calming and 1 teaspoonful (approx. 3 ml) diluted with a little water half an hour before bedtime for treating sleep disorders. If it is not effective enough, another teaspoonful can be taken before dinner. There is a possibility of overdose, especially in young children. Taking 10 g or more can lead to alcohol poisoning, which can be life-threatening. In DAB the event of an overdose, a doctor should be consulted immediately. Reaction may be impaired when taking valerian tincture, especially in combination with alcohol. Persons driving vehicles or operating machinery should exercise caution.
