The syrup contains 3.34 g of lactulose per 10 ml. Other ingredients include fructose, galactose, lactose, purified water and small amounts of digestible carbohydrates.

Contraindications

The medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients, if you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever which could indicate a serious illness, or if you suffer from the rare hereditary form of fructose intolerance.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.The laxative effect can occur after 2 to 10 hours, but it can also take 1 to 2 days before the first bowel movement.

For constipation, the recommended dose for adults is 5 to 10 g (equivalent to 7.5 to 15 ml) once or twice daily.Children should take 3 to 6 g (equivalent to 4.5 to 9 ml) once or twice a day.Higher doses may be required at the start of treatment, which may be reduced after 3 to 4 days.

For portocaval encephalopathy, adults should start treatment by taking 5 to 10 g (equivalent to 7.5 to 15 ml) 3 to 4 times daily and slowly increase the dose to 20 to 30 g (equivalent to 30 to 45 ml) 3 to 4 times daily to achieve the passing of 2 to 3 loose stools per day.

There are no specific dosage information available for use in children.

Intake
