Caelo Epsom Salt: An over-the-counter laxative

Caelo Epsom Salt is a finished medicine that is used as a laxative.The active ingredient in this product is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, also known as Epsom salt due to its bitter taste.It has long been used in medicine as a saline laxative.This product is suitable for short-term use in cases of constipation and for emptying the bowels before diagnostic and therapeutic measures.No prescription is required for this product.

Application

Unless otherwise prescribed, adults should dissolve 2 to 3 teaspoons (10 to 15 g) of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate in about 250 ml of water and drink.For rapid bowel emptying, 1 to 2 tablespoons (20 to 30 g) can be dissolved in about 500 ml of water.Children over 6 years receive half the dose.

Duration of application

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate should only be used short-term.Long-term use can lead to an increase in intestinal sluggishness.

Notes

Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.Overdose can lead to dehydration with electrolyte disturbances and magnesium poisoning.If you notice any side effects, please seek medical or pharmaceutical advice.This also applies to side effects that are not stated on the package.Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Contraindications

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate must not be used in cases of intestinal obstruction or impaired kidney function.It should not be used for inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases or water and electrolyte balance disorders.

Side effects

When using very high doses or chronic use, magnesium poisoning can occur, especially if kidney function is impaired.This can be characterized by central nervous disorders, muscle weakness, loss of reflexes, fatigue, partial paralysis, coma and cardiac arrhythmias.As with other laxatives, prolonged use can lead to increased losses of water, potassium and other salts.This can lead to disturbances in cardiac function and muscle weakness, especially if diuretics and adrenal steroids are taken at the same time.
