Directions for use of the article Thüringer Baldriantinktur Thuringian valerian tincture is used for the treatment of nervous restlessness and sleep-induced disorders. It contains the active substance Valeriana officinalis L. and should be used with caution as it contains 66.3% alcohol by volume. The tincture consists of a mixture of valerian root (1:5) and ethanol 70 % (V/V). It is available in original packs of 50 and 100 ml. The use of Thuringian valerian tincture during pregnancy and breast-feeding and in children under 12 years of age is not recommended, as no adequate studies are available. Persons with an alcohol, liver, brain or epilepsy disease should consult a doctor before use. The recommended dosage for adults is 1/2 teaspoonful (approx. 1.5 ml) 2 to 3 times daily for sedation and 1 teaspoonful (approx. 3 ml) diluted with a little water before bedtime for sleep disorders. If the effect is insufficient, an additional 1 teaspoonful can be taken before dinner. The maximum dose should not be exceeded. In case of an overdose, alcohol poisoning may occur, especially in small children. Side effects are not known but may occur. People with allergies or hypersensitivities to valerian or other ingredients should not use the medicine. The medicinal product must be kept tightly closed and protected from light. It should not be used after the expiry date. Children should not have access to the medicinal product.
