Artelac eye drops contain the active ingredient hypromellose and are used for the symptomatic treatment of drying symptoms of the cornea and conjunctiva caused by tear secretion and tear function disorders, local or systemic diseases and insufficient or incomplete eyelid closure. This manifests itself in symptoms such as burning eyes, foreign body sensation and photophobia in wind, heat and fatigue. The drops can also be used for wetting and rewetting hard contact lenses. The drops contain the preservative cetrimide, which may cause irritation of the eye in rare cases. The recommended dosage is 1 drop per eye 3-5 times daily or more often as needed. Soft contact lenses should be removed before use and reinserted no earlier than 15 minutes afterwards. There is no limit to the duration of use, but a doctor should be consulted for prolonged use. Possible side effects include hypersensitivity reactions and clouding of the cornea due to calcium deposits, although these are rare. The medicine must not be used if you are allergic to hypromellose or any of the other ingredients. There are no specific studies on use during pregnancy and lactation, so use with caution during these periods. The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and must not be used after the expiry date. The package leaflet should be read before use and a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted in case of side effects. Artelac eye drops are available in packs of 10 ml or 3 x 10 ml.
