Gaviscon Dual Suspension is a medicine used to treat the acid-related symptoms of gastrooesophageal reflux such as heartburn, acid regurgitation and indigestion (dyspepsia). It contains a combination of sodium alginate, sodium hydrogen carbonate and calcium carbonate that works in two ways. The suspension forms a protective layer over the stomach contents and relieves the burning pain sensation in the chest for up to 4 hours. At the same time, it neutralises excess stomach acid, which relieves pain and discomfort. It is used by taking the suspension in the sachet after meals and before bedtime. The dosage depends on the age of the patient. Adolescents from 12 years and adults can take 10-20 ml (1-2 sachets) up to 4 times a day. An overdose is possible and can lead to a feeling of tension in the abdomen. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking it. There are some contraindications to use, especially hypersensitivity to the ingredients. Possible side effects include allergic reactions to excipients, breathing difficulties and bronchial spasms.
