Areas of application

Otalgan ear drops are used to treat painful and acute inflammatory diseases of the middle ear without a defect in the eardrum and to relieve ear pain.This includes inflammation of the external or middle auditory canal, ear boils and general ear pain (otalgia).

Mode of action

The active ingredient phenazone in Otalgan ear drops has an anti-inflammatory effect.Glycerol provides moisture.Due to its acidic environment, Otalgan normalizes the inflamed skin areas and prevents the spread of pathogens.

Active ingredients and ingredients

Otalgan ear drops contain the following active ingredients: 50 mg phenazone, 10 mg procaine hydrochloride and 8.66 mg procaine.It contains 0.1 mg butylhydroxyanisole and 939.9 mg glycerol as excipients.

Contraindications

Otalgan ear drops should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients, damaged eardrums, existing ear canal inflammation and certain metabolic diseases such as hepatic porphyria or congenital glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the product should only be used for short periods of time and under medical supervision if absolutely necessary.

Dosage

Otalgan ear drops should be used at body temperature.To use, lie on your side on a flat surface and drip the ear drops into the ear canal of the affected ear.Toddlers and school children receive 2-3 drops every 2-4 hours, adults and adolescents 5 drops every 2-4 hours.The maximum daily dose should not exceed 3-4 single applications.After application, stay lying down for about 15 minutes to improve the effect.Then close the treated ear with cotton wool to avoid cold and drafts.The last application of the day should ideally be before going to bed.

Intake

Ear drops should be dripped into the ear canal of the affected ear at body temperature (e.g. by warming with your hand, do not heat) while lying on your side.The side position should then be maintained for about 15 minutes so that the ear drops can take effect.The ear is then loosely closed with cotton wool.No cotton cap is required after the end of the treatment.

Patient information

Particular caution is required when using it.Its use for chronic middle ear infections may only be carried out under medical supervision.In children under 3 years of age, the medicine may only be used after medical supervision.Butylated hydroxyanisole can cause localized skin irritation, irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes.No influence on the ability to drive or use machines has been observed when using this medicine.However, you should not sit behind the wheel of a vehicle after use, as the ear canal will be closed with cotton and this can affect your hearing and ability to react.

Pregnancy

There is no experience with the use of this drug in pregnant women and there are no animal studies on the possible effects of the combination of active ingredients on pregnancy and child development.Therefore, this medicine must not be used during pregnancy unless the treating doctor considers it absolutely necessary.In this case, the medicine should only be used short-term and at the lowest dose.
