Otalgan ear drops are used for the topical treatment of pain in the external auditory canal, such as inflammation of the auditory canal and acute otitis media. They are only used if the eardrum is not damaged. The drops are dripped into the ear canal and should be left to act for about 15 minutes. The usual duration of treatment is 5 days, but can be extended indefinitely under medical supervision. The dosage depends on age: infants and schoolchildren up to 14 years of age should use 2-3 drops 3-4 times a day, while adolescents 15 years and older and adults should use 5 drops 3-4 times a day. Possible side effects include skin changes and hives. Otalgan should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to the ingredients, certain metabolic diseases, damaged eardrum or ear canal inflammation with skin lesions. A doctor should be consulted before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The active ingredients in Otalgan are phenazone 50 mg/g and procaine hydrochloride 10 mg/g. Phenazone has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. It inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are responsible for pain and inflammation. Otalgan should be stored at room temperature (25°C) and can be kept for 12 weeks after opening the bottle. If an overdose is suspected, a doctor should be contacted.
