1 gastro-resistant tablet of Pantoprazole AL 20 mg for heartburn contains:

Active ingredient: 20 mg pantoprazole as pantoprazole sodium 1.5 H2O

The other components are:

Tablet core: calcium stearate (Ph.Eur.), carmellose sodium, crospovidone (type B), maltitol, sodium carbonate

Tablet coating: Macrogol 3350, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) dispersion 30% (Ph.Eur.), sodium carbonate, poly(vinyl alcohol), deoiled phospholipids from soybeans, talc, triethyl citrate, iron (III) hydroxide oxide 3 H2O (E 172), titanium dioxide (E 171)

Contraindications

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to pantoprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, or if you are also taking a medicine that contains atazanavir (used to treat an HIV-infection).

Dosage

The recommended dose is 20 mg pantoprazole (1 tablet) per day.To improve symptoms, it may be necessary to take the tablets on 2-3 consecutive days.Pantoprazole AL 20 mg for heartburn is available as enteric-coated tablets and should not be chewed or crushed, but should be taken whole with liquid on an empty stomach about 1 hour before a meal.Once complete relief of symptoms has occurred, treatment should be discontinued.Treatment should not last longer than 4 weeks without medical advice.

Intake

Take the tablet at the same time every day before a meal.Swallow the tablet whole with a little water.Do not bite or break the tablet.

Please talk to your doctor before taking the medicine if you have had treatment for heartburn or indigestion for 4 weeks or longer, if you are older than 55 years and treat indigestion daily with non-prescription medicines, if you are older than 55 years and have new or recently changed reflux symptoms, if you have had a stomach ulcer or gastric surgery in the past, if you have or are suspected of having a stomach ulcerif you have liver problems or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), if you see your doctor regularly because of severe symptoms or serious medical conditions, if you are scheduled to have an endoscopy or a breath test called a 13C-urea breath test, or if you have ever experienced skin reactions as a result of treatment with a medicine similar to Pantoprazole AL 20 mg, which also reduces stomach acid.

If you develop a skin rash, especially on sun-exposed areas, tell your doctor immediately as you may need to stop treatment with Pantoprazole AL 20 mg.Don't forget to mention other adverse health effects such as joint pain.

Tell your doctor immediately, before or after taking this medicine, if you notice any of the following symptoms, which could be a sign of another, more serious condition: unintentional weight loss (not due to a diet or exercise program), vomiting, especially if vomiting occurs repeatedly, vomiting blood;This may look like dark coffee grounds in the vomit, blood in the stool which may look black or tarry, difficulty swallowing or pain when swallowing, paleness and feeling weak (anaemia), chest pain, stomach pain, severe and/or persistent diarrhoea, as this medicine has been associated with a slight increase in infectious diarrhoea.

Your doctor may order some tests.Before a scheduled blood test, tell your doctor that you are taking this medicine.

If you use Pantoprazole AL 20 mg for more than three months, it is possible that the levels of magnesium in your blood may decrease.Low magnesium levels can manifest as fatigue, involuntary muscle contractions, confusion, cramps, dizziness and increased heart rate.If you experience any of these symptoms, tell your doctor immediately.Low magnesium levels can also lead to a reduction in potassium and calcium levels in the blood.Your doctor may want to do regular blood tests to check your magnesium levels.

After just one day of treatment with Pantoprazole AL 20 mg, your symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn may be relieved, but this medicine does not have to provide immediate relief.You should not take it as a preventive measure.

If you suffer from recurrent heartburn or indigestion over a long period of time, remember to see your doctor regularly.

Long-term use of Pantoprazole AL 20 mg carries additional risks, such as falling magnesium levels in the blood (possible symptoms: tiredness, muscle twitching, disorientation, cramps, dizziness, rapid heartbeat).Low magnesium levels can also lead to a reduction in potassium or calcium concentrations in the blood.Talk to your doctor if you have taken this medicine for more than 4 weeks.Your doctor will then determine whether your magnesium levels will be monitored regularly through blood tests.

Pantoprazole AL 20 mg should not be taken by children and adolescents under 18 years of age as there is a lack of safety information for this younger age group.

If side effects such as dizziness or blurred vision occur, you should not drive or operate machines.

Pantoprazole AL 20 mg contains maltitol.Please only take Pantoprazole AL 20 mg after consulting your doctor if you know that you have an intolerance to certain sugars.
