Pancreatan 25,000 is a medicine used to treat digestive disorders caused by reduced or absent function of the pancreas. It contains a mixture of enzymes called pancreas powder, which is extracted from pig pancreases. The pancreas powder is slowly released into the intestines to aid digestion. The dosage is based on various factors such as the severity of the condition, weight, diet and the amount of fat in the stool. Children under 4 years of age are recommended an initial dose of 1,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal, while children 4 years and older are given a dosage of 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal. Adolescents and adults start with 500 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per meal and can take between 25,000 and 80,000 lipase units per meal. Pancreatan should always be taken during or immediately after a meal or snack to ensure optimal mixing with food. The capsules should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid. If it is difficult to swallow the capsules, they can be opened carefully and the microfilm tablets contained can be taken unchewed. The medicinal product should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be used after the expiry date which is stated on the label. It should be stored at a temperature below 25 °C and the container kept tightly closed. Like any medicinal product, Pancreatan can cause side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, flatulence, allergic reactions and skin rash. In case of adverse effects, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted. It should be noted that pancreatane should not be used if there is hypersensitivity to the ingredients or if there is inflammation of the pancreas in an acute state.
