Thioctic acid, also known as alpha lipoic acid, is a substance that the body produces naturally and that influences various metabolic processes.It also has an antioxidant effect and protects the nerve cells from harmful degradation products.This medicine is used for abnormal sensations caused by diabetic nerve damage (polyneuropathy).

Active ingredients and ingredients

The medicine contains 600 mg DL-alpha-lipoic acid as the active ingredient.The following excipients are also included: carboxymethyl starch, sodium salt type A, cellulose powder, microcrystalline cellulose, iron (III) hydroxide oxide x-water, hypromellose, lactose 1-water, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate, povidone K25, silicon dioxide 1-water, highly disperse silicon dioxide, stearic acid, talc and titanium dioxide.

Contraindications

The medicine should not be taken if you are allergic to thioctic acid or any of the other ingredients.

Dosage

Always take the medicine exactly as described or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.The recommended dose is one film-coated tablet (corresponding to 600 mg thioctic acid) as a single dose approximately 30 minutes before the first meal.Since diabetic nerve damage is a chronic disease, long-term use may be necessary.Discuss this with your doctor.No prescription is required for this product.

If you take more than you should, you may experience nausea, vomiting and headaches.An overdose of more than 10 g of thioctic acid, especially in combination with heavy alcohol consumption, can cause severe symptoms of poisoning.In such cases, immediate hospitalization is required.

If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose.If you have any further questions about use, ask your doctor or pharmacy.

Intake

The film-coated tablets should be taken whole and with sufficient liquid on an empty stomach.Concomitant consumption of food may hinder the transfer of thioctic acid into the bloodstream.It is therefore particularly important to take the tablet half an hour before a meal.

The basis of the treatment is the optimal diabetes control.Taking the tablet while eating can hinder the absorption of the active ingredient.Regular consumption of alcohol is a significant risk factor for the development and progression of neurological disorders and can impair the success of treatment.It is therefore recommended to avoid drinking alcohol as much as possible.The active ingredient is a metal chelator and should not be taken at the same time as metal compounds (e.g. iron preparations, magnesium preparations, dairy products due to the calcium content).By taking the entire daily dose 30 minutes before breakfast, iron and magnesium supplements can be taken at lunch or in the evening.
