Instructions for use for Isotonic saline solution 0.9% Bernburg infusion solution, 10X500 ml
Product information
Isotonic saline solution 0.9% Bernburg is an electrolyte solution for intravenous infusion. The active ingredient is sodium chloride. This solution is used for fluid and electrolyte replacement in hypochloremic alkalosis, to cover chloride losses, as short-term intravascular volume replacement and in hypotonic and isotonic dehydration. No prescription is required for this product.
Composition
1000 ml of the infusion solution contains 9.0 g sodium chloride. The other ingredients are water for injections. The solution is sterile and pyrogen-free, with a pH between 4.5 and 7.0.The theoretical osmolarity is 309 mOsm/l.
Application and dosage
The isotonic saline solution is administered intravenously. The dosage depends on the individual fluid and electrolyte requirements, which are approximately 40 ml per kilogram of body weight per day or 2 mmol sodium per kilogram of body weight per day.The maximum infusion rate and daily dose depend on the clinical situation. For adults, the recommended sodium dose is 3-6 mmol per kilogram of body weight, and for children it is 3-5 mmol per kilogram of body weight.Too fast an infusion rate should be avoided in hypertonic dehydration to prevent an increase in plasma osmolarity and plasma sodium concentration.
Contraindications and precautions
The solution must not be used in overwatering conditions (hyperhydration conditions).Particular caution is required in cases of reduced blood potassium (hypokalemia), increased blood sodium (hypernatremia), increased blood chloride (hyperchloremia), as well as in diseases that require restrictive sodium intake, such as heart failure, generalized edema, pulmonary edema, hypertension, eclampsia and severe renal insufficiency.Regular checks of electrolyte and fluid status are required.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are no concerns about use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Interactions
To date, there are no known interactions with other medications.
Side effects
Possible side effects include increased sodium and chloride content in the blood (hypernatremia, hyperchloremia).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include overhydration, increased sodium and chloride levels in the blood, hyperosmolarity and an acidotic metabolic state. In the event of an overdose, the supply of the solution should be interrupted, elimination via the kidneys accelerated and the supply of the corresponding electrolytes reduced.
Durability and storage
The solution may only be used clear and in intact containers. After the expiry date, the solution must no longer be used.Medicines should be kept out of the reach of children.Bags should be used unventilated. For technical reasons, the polyethylene vial contains a residual volume of air, therefore pressure infusions must only be carried out under controlled conditions to avoid the risk of air embolism.
