Movicol is a medicine used to treat constipation. It contains the active ingredient macrogol 3350, which softens the stool and increases the stool volume. This stimulates the movement of the bowels and relieves constipation. Movicol is sold as a powder that is dissolved in water and taken. It is suitable for adolescents aged 12 and over and adults. The recommended dosage is 1-3 sachets per day, depending on the severity of the constipation. Treatment should not normally last longer than 2 weeks. Side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and flatulence. Movicol should not be used if there is hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients or in certain bowel conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Pregnant women should consult their doctor before use. The medicine should be stored away from heat. Interactions with other medicines may occur, so it is important to inform the doctor or pharmacist of all medicines taken.
