Mode of action

The active ingredient xylometazoline hydrochloride contained in Otriven® against colds 0.1% nasal spray (dosage spray) has vasoconstricting properties.It contracts the veins in the mucous membrane, which reduces excessive blood flow to the nose and causes the mucous membrane to swell.

Otriven® against colds 0.1% nasal spray (dosage spray) contains the following active ingredients and ingredients: xylometazoline hydrochloride 1 mg/ml, purified water, sodium chloride, sodium monohydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate and sodium edetate.

Contraindications

Otriven® against colds 0.1% nasal spray (dosage spray) should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient, in children under 12 years of age, glaucoma and in cases of drying out of the nasal mucosa with crust formation.During pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the case of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, the use of drugs that increase blood pressure, increased intraocular pressure, a genetic disorder in the formation of parts of the red blood pigment (porphyria) and benign enlargement of the prostate gland, a doctor should be consulted before using this product.

Dosage

For adults and children aged 12 and over, if necessary, a spray of Otriven® for colds 0.1% nasal spray (dosage spray) without preservatives can be given into each nostril up to 3 times a day to clear the nose.Before the first use, the pump should be filled by spraying 4 times.Before use, blow your nose and insert the spray opening into one nostril, pump once and breathe in gently through your nose.Repeat the process on the other nostril.

For hygiene reasons and to avoid infections, the bottle should only be used by one person at a time.If several people in a household are sick at the same time, the hygienic “single-dose format” (single-dose pipettes - applicable to adults and children aged 12 and over) is recommended.The nasal spray should not be used for longer than 7 days.

Intake

This preparation is intended for nasal use.It is advisable to blow your nose thoroughly before using the product.The last application of each treatment day should preferably be before going to bed.For hygienic reasons and to avoid infections, please note that each dosage unit may only be used by one patient at a time.

Patient information

Particular caution in use is required in cases of increased intraocular pressure, severe cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure, the use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors and other potentially blood pressure-increasing drugs, tumors of the adrenal gland, metabolic disorders such as hyperthyroidism and diabetes, prostate enlargement and metabolic disease (porphyria).The long-term use of medications that decongest the mucous membranes can lead to chronic swelling and eventual loss of the nasal mucosa.

The medicine must not be used in children under 6 years of age.When used as intended, no impairment of the ability to drive or operate machines is expected.

Pregnancy

Since the safety of using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been sufficiently proven, it should only be taken on the advice of a doctor.The recommended dosage must not be exceeded during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as an overdose can affect the blood supply to the unborn child or reduce milk production.

Other

If the drug is used for a long time or in larger quantities, effects on the heart and blood vessels or effects on the brain and spinal cord cannot be ruled out.Prolonged or frequent use and higher amounts of the drug can cause burning or dryness of the mucous membrane in the nose and increased blood flow to the nasal mucosa.Reapplication should only be carried out after a break of several days.

Due to the risk of the nasal mucosa shrinking, it may only be used under medical supervision if you have a chronic cold.
