Emla® cream

Emla® Cream is a local anesthetic that is used to locally anesthetize the skin.It helps to reduce the sensation of pain during various medical and cosmetic procedures so that they can be carried out with less pain.The product is available without a prescription.

Painful needle punctures can cause anxiety and stress in many people.Emla® contains the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine, which numb the skin in the affected area and thus relieve pain.This makes it a suitable alternative to anesthetic injections for minor surgical procedures.

Emla® Cream is applied directly to the area of skin to be anesthetized.The active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine are distributed in the top layer of skin and block the conduction of pain stimuli.This reduces the sensation of pain.The exposure time is 1 to 5 hours and the effect lasts at least 2 hours.

Areas of application

Emla® Cream is suitable for various areas of application, including:

Anesthesia of the skin before needle punctures, such as during injections or blood draws.

Anesthesia of the skin before minor surgical procedures.

Anesthesia of the genitals before medical procedures such as wart removal.

Anesthetizing the skin before cleaning or removing damaged skin for leg ulcers.

Anesthesia of the skin during cosmetic needle procedures such as injections, fillers, permanent makeup, microneedling, microblading and laser hair removal.

Anesthesia of the skin for tattoos and piercings.

Active ingredients and ingredients

The active ingredients of Emla® Cream are lidocaine and prilocaine.Each gram of cream contains 25 mg of lidocaine and 25 mg of prilocaine.

The other ingredients include macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate, carbomer 974P, sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment and purified water.

Contraindications

Emla® cream must not be used if you are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, other similar local anesthetics or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.

Dosage

The dosage for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age is 2 g of cream for smaller procedures and a maximum of 60 g for larger skin areas.The cream takes effect for 1 to 2 hours and the effect lasts for at least 2 hours.

Application

When applying the cream it is important to follow the following instructions:

Squeeze a dollop of cream from the tube where it is needed.Do not massage the cream in.

Peel off the paper layer from the middle cutout of the patch on the non-adhesive side.Then peel off the cover on the adhesive side of the patch.

Carefully place the plaster over the pile of cream.Do not spread the cream under the plaster.

Remove the paper backing and carefully press the corners of the patch.Leave it like this for at least 60 minutes.

Your doctor or nurse will remove the patch and remove the cream just before having the medical procedure.

Patient information

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using the cream if you or your child have a rare congenital disease called "glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency" or a problem with the blood levels of the blood pigment methemoglobin, called "methaemoglobinemia.

Except for leg ulcers, do not use the cream on areas with rashes, cuts, abrasions, or other open wounds.

If you or your child have an itchy skin condition called "atopic dermatitis," a shorter exposure time may be sufficient.

If you are taking special medicines for cardiac arrhythmias (class III antiarrhythmics, such as amiodarone), the doctor will monitor your heart function.

Due to the possible increased absorption through freshly shaved skin, it is important to adhere to the recommended dosage, skin area and exposure time.

Avoid getting the cream in your eyes as this may cause irritation.If the cream accidentally gets into your eye, immediately rinse it well with lukewarm water or saline solution (sodium chloride).

The preparation should not be used on a damaged eardrum.

If you use the cream before vaccinations with live vaccines, you should visit your doctor or nurse again within the specified time to check the vaccination result.

In infants/newborns younger than 3 months, a temporary, clinically insignificant increase in the concentration of the blood pigment methemoglobin in the blood is often observed up to 12 hours after application of the cream (methemoglobinemia).

The effectiveness of the cream in taking blood samples from the heel of newborns or in providing adequate analgesia during circumcision has not been confirmed in clinical studies.

Due to insufficient data on active ingredient absorption, the cream should not be used on the genital skin (e.g. penis) and genital mucous membrane (e.g. in the vagina) in children (under 12 years of age).

The preparation should not be used in children younger than 12 months who are being treated at the same time with other medicines that affect the blood concentration of the blood pigment methemoglobin ("methemoglobinemia") (e.g. sulfonamides).

The cream should not be used on premature babies.

The medicine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines when used in the recommended doses.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Occasional use of the cream during pregnancy is unlikely to have any negative effects on the unborn child.

The active ingredients of the drug (lidocaine and prilocaine) pass into breast milk.However, the amount is so small that there is generally no risk to the child.

Animal studies showed no impairment of male or female fertility.

Notes

Contains macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate.Avoid contact with eyes.

Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
