Mode of action

Unfortunately, when it comes to fighting pimples, water and soap are not enough to get rid of acne-causing bacteria.Anyone who struggles with particularly blemished skin or acne on their face needs a more effective form of treatment.An effective remedy against acne is the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide (BPO) contained in Benzaknen® 5% gel.

BPO eliminates 94% of all acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) and is therefore an effective weapon in the fight against pimples and acne.

Thanks to its lipophilic properties, benzoyl peroxide penetrates the clogged pores and develops its effect there.

Dead cells from the horny layer are removed, the clogged pores are opened and the excess sebum can flow away.

In this way, the breeding ground for acne bacteria is removed, the complexion improves and the risk of inflammation and skin irritation is reduced.

In contrast to treatment with antibiotics, no resistance occurs with products containing the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide.Even after several weeks, Benzaknen® still works like it did on the first day.

1 g of Benzaknen® 5% gel contains 50 mg of benzoyl peroxide as an active ingredient.

Other components of Benzaknen® 5% gel are:

Carbomer 940, sodium edetate (Ph.Eur.), docusate sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, propylene glycol, poloxamer, glycerol, acrylate copolymer, sodium hydroxide, purified water.

Contraindications

This product should not be used if you are known to be hypersensitive to one of the ingredients, have previously damaged skin, on mucous membranes and in the area of the mouth, nose and corners of the eyes, in the last month of pregnancy or if you are receiving intensive UV-radiation at the same time.

Use for neurodermatitis as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding should only be carried out after consultation with a doctor.

Dosage

It is best to cleanse your skin with a medical cleansing gel before use.Then dry the skin well and apply a thin layer of Benzaknen® 5% gel to the affected skin areas.For optimal treatment of acne, the gel should be used once or twice a day.

To meet the specific needs of acne-prone skin, the Benzaknen® and Benzacare™ product offering includes several products.Depending on the skin condition and severity of the disease, the holistic use of the Benzaknen® product family is recommended to successfully combat acne. The three important phases of cleaning, treatment and care play a particularly important role here:

Step 1: Cleanse the skin carefully - ideally with a mild, pH-neutral washing substance such as the deep-acting Benzacare™ cleansing gel.Then gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel.

Step 2: Then apply Benzaknen® 5% gel thinly to the affected skin areas - for example, to pimples, blackheads or lesions.Do not bring the anti-pimple gel into contact with eyes, nose and mouth mucous membranes.

Step 3: Allow gel to dry and then apply a gentle, non-greasy moisturizer (e.g. Benzacare™ moisturizer).

After 14 days at the latest, acne therapy with Benzaknen® 5% gel should show visible success.The number of pimples or blackheads or skin irritations should have noticeably reduced.If the desired effect has not yet occurred, be patient.The average duration of use is 4-12 weeks.

Initially, therapy with benzoyl peroxide can cause skin irritation.These side effects usually subside after a few days.If the skin is peeling, there is no need to worry: it actually promotes healing.Benzaknen® 5% Gel can cause the skin to dry out more quickly.Therefore, the application should always be accompanied by a soothing, non-greasy moisturizer (e.g. from Benzacare™).If success is evident, acne treatment can be continued over a longer period of time.

Intake

The preparation is intended exclusively for use on the skin.

For use on skin only.

Consult your doctor before using the product if you are prone to hay fever, allergic asthma or neurodermatitis (atopy) and your skin is dry and produces little sebum (sebostasis).

There may be a slight burning sensation on the skin upon first use and redness and peeling of the skin may occur within a few days.

During the first few weeks of treatment, most patients notice a sudden increase in peeling of the skin.This is not harmful and usually resolves after a day or two if treatment is temporarily discontinued.

If severe skin irritation occurs, consult a doctor and temporarily stop using the drug or stop treatment altogether.

Benzoyl peroxide can cause swelling and blistering of the skin.If any of these symptoms occur, you must stop treatment with this medicine.In this case, see a doctor.

Do not use any additional skin irritants, otherwise increased skin irritation may occur.

Avoid intense UV-exposure to light (sun, solariums) as this can cause increased skin irritation.

The preparation must not come into contact with eyes and mucous membranes and must not be applied in the area of the mouth, nose and corners of the eyes.

The preparation must not be used on damaged skin.

Contact with eyes causes redness and burning.If the product accidentally comes into contact with the eyes, the eye should be rinsed with plenty of running water for about 15 minutes.

Caution is advised when using the product on the neck and other sensitive skin areas.

Benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient in the preparation, can cause discomfort in the esophagus and stomach if accidentally ingested.Seek medical attention if the product is accidentally taken.

The active ingredient benzoyl peroxide can bleach (discolor) or change the color of hair (including eyebrows) and colored textiles (e.g. T-shirts, bed linen, pajamas, washcloths, towels), thereby damaging them.These effects can occur when the product comes into direct contact with textiles or hair, but also through indirect contact, e.g. via the hands or the treated skin.Even after the product has been absorbed into the skin or after the product has been washed off the skin, the bleaching effect may remain.In order to prevent possible damage, it is recommended that you clean your hands thoroughly with soap and, if necessary, a nail brush after use and to avoid contact of the product or the treated skin with the hair, e.g. by using hair ties or hair clips.The use of white textiles is recommended during the treatment.

The safety and effectiveness of the preparation have not been studied in prepubescent children (under 12 years of age) because acne vulgaris rarely occurs in this age group.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

There are no data on human use during pregnancy.

The treating doctor decides on the use of the preparation during pregnancy and breastfeeding after a careful risk-benefit assessment.

There is no information available about the transfer into breast milk after external application during breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding mothers should not use the product on or around the breast to avoid the infant coming into direct contact with the product.

Notes

Benzaknen® 5% gel has a bleaching effect.Therefore, leave your eyebrows, beard and forehead hairline out of the treatment.Be careful with colored textiles too.

Benzaknen® 5% Gel should be kept out of the reach of children.
