Mode of action

Acne is often caused by acne bacteria.Water and soap are usually not enough to kill these bacteria.Benzaknen® 5% Gel contains the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide (BPO), which penetrates deep into the pores and works there. BPO loosens dead cells from the stratum corneum, opens clogged pores and allows excess sebum to drain away.This improves the skin's appearance and reduces the risk of inflammation and skin irritation.In contrast to antibiotics, BPO does not cause bacterial resistance, so the agent remains effective even after several weeks.

Application

Benzaknen® 5% gel is suitable for teenagers aged 12 and over and adults.Before use, the skin should be thoroughly cleansed and dried.The gel is then applied thinly to the affected skin areas, once or twice a day.For optimal results, the gel should be used over a period of 4-12 weeks.If you have sensitive skin, use can initially be limited to once a day.

To avoid drying out the skin, use should be accompanied with a soothing, non-comedogenic moisturizer.If the skin continues to be irritated, medical advice should be sought.

1 g of Benzaknen® 5% gel contains 50 mg of benzoyl peroxide as an active ingredient.The other ingredients include carbomer 940, sodium edetate (Ph. Eur.), docusate sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, propylene glycol, poloxamer 182, glycerol, acrylate copolymer, sodium hydroxide and purified water.

Contraindications

Benzaknen® 5% Gel should not be used if you are known to be hypersensitive to one of the ingredients, if you have previously damaged skin, on mucous membranes and in the corners of the mouth, nose and eyes, in the last month of pregnancy or if you are receiving intensive UV-radiation at the same time.In the case of neurodermatitis as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it should only be used after consulting a doctor.

Patient information

Benzaknen® 5% Gel is intended exclusively for use on the skin.When first used, you may experience a slight burning sensation, as well as redness and peeling of the skin.There may be an increase in peeling in the first few weeks of treatment, but this is not harmful and will subside after a day or two if treatment is temporarily suspended.If severe skin irritation occurs, a doctor should be consulted and use should be temporarily suspended or discontinued.

Benzoyl peroxide can cause swelling and blistering of the skin.If these symptoms occur, treatment should be stopped and a doctor consulted.No additional skin irritants should be used to avoid increased skin irritation.Intense UV-exposure to light should be avoided as increased skin irritation may occur.

The preparation must not come into contact with eyes and mucous membranes and must not be applied to the corners of the mouth, nose or corners of the eyes.In case of contact with the eyes, the eye should be rinsed with plenty of running water for approx. 15 minutes.Caution should be exercised when used on the neck and other sensitive skin areas.

If taken accidentally, benzoyl peroxide can cause discomfort in the esophagus and stomach.If you accidentally ingest it, you should consult a doctor.

The active ingredient benzoyl peroxide can bleach or change the color of hair and colored textiles.To prevent possible damage, hands should be thoroughly washed with soap and, if necessary, after use. Nail brush must be cleaned and contact of the product or the treated skin with the hair must be avoided.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.There are no data on human use during pregnancy.The treating doctor decides on the use of the preparation during pregnancy and breastfeeding after a careful risk-benefit assessment.There is no information available about the transfer into breast milk after external application during breastfeeding.Breastfeeding mothers should not use the product on or around the breast to avoid the infant coming into direct contact with the product.

Notes

Benzaknen® 5% gel has a bleaching effect.Therefore, leave your eyebrows, beard and forehead hairline out of the treatment.Be careful with colored textiles too.Benzaknen® 5% gel should be kept out of the reach of children.
