Areas of application

Cetirizine dihydrochloride is the active ingredient of cetirizine AL syrup.It is an anti-allergic drug.Cetirizine AL syrup is indicated for the relief of nasal and ocular symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and for the relief of chronic hives (chronic idiopathic urticaria).This applies to adults and children aged 2 and over.

Active ingredients and ingredients

Cetirizine AL syrup contains cetirizine dihydrochloride as the active ingredient.The following excipients are also included: acetic acid, glycerol, sodium acetate-3-water, propylene glycol, saccharin sodium salt, sorbitol solution 70%, purified water, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and banana flavor.

Contraindications

Cetirizine AL syrup must not be taken if you have severe kidney disease or if you are allergic to cetirizine dihydrochloride, any of the other ingredients of the drug, hydroxyzine or other piperazine derivatives.

Dosage and application

Cetirizine AL syrup should always be taken exactly as described or after consulting a doctor or pharmacist.Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age take 10 ml of oral solution once daily.Children between 6 and 12 years of age take 5 ml of oral solution twice daily.Children between 2 and 6 years take 2.5 ml oral solution twice daily.Patients with moderate kidney failure are recommended to take 5 ml of solution once daily.

The solution can be taken undiluted.The duration of intake depends on the type, duration and course of the symptoms and is determined by the doctor.

Side effects

Possible side effects include gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, tiredness, sleepiness, restlessness, sore throat, dry mouth, runny nose, abnormal sensations, skin hypersensitivity reactions such as itching and rash, malaise and general weakness.

Mode of action

The active ingredient cetirizine dihydrochloride helps with allergies and relieves itching.It suppresses the effects of the body's own substance histamine and prostaglandins by inhibiting their release from the mast cells and displacing them from their binding sites.Histamine and prostaglandins play an important role in the development of inflammation and allergic reactions.

Important notes

Caution is advised if you are allergic to the sweetener saccharin.Parabens can cause hypersensitivity reactions.If you have an intolerance to fructose, the sugar content should be taken into account.Cetirizine AL syrup can increase the effects of alcohol and has little influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Storage

Cetirizine AL syrup must be stored in the dark.Once opened, the medicine has a maximum shelf life of 12 weeks and must be stored at room temperature in the dark.

Patient information

If kidney function is impaired, the dose should be reduced.Patients with difficulty urinating, epilepsy or risk of seizures should speak to their doctor before taking it.Before an allergy test, you should stop taking the medication.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Taking the drug should be avoided by pregnant women.Cetirizine passes into breast milk, so the medicine should not be taken during breast-feeding unless recommended by the doctor.
