Instructions for use for Folic acid AL 5 mg tablets, 20 pcs

Folic acid AL 5 mg tablets

Folic acid AL 5 mg tablets is a vitamin preparation that is used to treat folic acid deficiency states that cannot be compensated for by diet. The preparation contains the active ingredient folic acid and is available in tablet form.No prescription is required for this product.

Active ingredient and ingredients

Each tablet contains 5 mg of folic acid as the active ingredient. The preparation also contains the following other ingredients: cellulose powder, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate (Ph.Eur.), highly dispersed silicon dioxide and talc. Please note that the preparation contains lactose.

Areas of application

Folic acid AL 5 mg tablets is used to treat folic acid deficiency conditions.Such a deficiency can arise from an increased need, malnutrition or impaired absorption of folic acid. The tablets are easy to take and support important body functions.

Support important body functions

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9 or vitamin B11, plays an important role in metabolism. It is involved in cell division, growth processes and the formation of red blood cells.Folic acid deficiency is more widespread in the European population than many people think, especially among people with certain diseases or in special life situations.

Causes of folic acid deficiency

Folic acid is mainly absorbed through food.Rich sources include spinach, lamb's lettuce, kale, legumes, whole grain products and tomatoes. However, under certain circumstances, sufficient folic acid may not be supplied or utilized by the body.Chronic intestinal diseases, advanced age, small intestinal intolerance to gluten, malnutrition and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a folic acid deficiency that cannot be compensated for by food intake. In such cases, taking folic acid AL can help balance folic acid levels.

If the folic acid level is low, a vitamin B12 deficiency should generally be ruled out.

Application recommendation

Depending on your needs, 1 to 3 tablets can be taken per day, which corresponds to a dose of 5 to 15 mg of folic acid. The tablets should be taken whole with meals with sufficient liquid, such as a glass of water.

The duration of treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and is determined by the doctor individually for each patient.

Special life situations

A deficiency of folic acid can develop in older people as a result of an unbalanced diet or absorption disorders. The body may no longer be able to absorb and utilize nutrients as well.Illnesses also play an important role here.Folic acid AL can be taken as a supplement to balance folic acid levels.

In chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, the risk of nutrient deficiencies is higher.Vitamin and mineral levels, especially folic acid levels, should be checked, as folic acid deficiency can be detected in a significant proportion of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.Women are affected significantly more often.

Celiac disease refers to recurrent inflammation of the small intestine due to gluten ingestion. This gluten intolerance can manifest itself in symptoms such as flatulence, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Those affected by celiac disease often have a deficiency in folic acid, but also in vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc and copper.

Frequently asked questions and answers

How can a folic acid deficiency manifest itself?

Symptoms of folic acid deficiency may include fatigue, tingling of the tongue, paleness, inflammation of the intestinal lining, diarrhea, loss of appetite and anemia. An existing deficiency is determined by the appearance of the red blood cells. If these are enlarged and can be stained more intensively, there is a folic acid deficiency.

How long should folic acid AL be used?

The duration of treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and depends on the clinical picture and, if necessary, the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurements. It is determined by the doctor individually for each patient.

What should you pay attention to when taking folic acid AL?

The increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency.Because of the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, before treating anemia due to impaired red blood cell development (megaloblastic anemia), it must be ensured that this is not due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. The cause of megaloblastic anemia must be clarified before therapy begins.

Contraindications

This medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to folic acid or any other ingredient in this medicine.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor or pharmacy before taking this medicine. There are no known risks up to a daily dose of 5 mg.There is no sufficient experience with the use of a daily dose of more than 5 mg folic acid during pregnancy, therefore the maximum daily dose of 5 mg folic acid should not be exceeded.

Notes

Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging. The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
