Folsan 5mg tablets contain the active ingredient folic acid, which belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins.Folic acid is involved in many metabolic processes in the body, especially in the structure of cells and the formation of red blood cells.No prescription is required for this product.

Areas of application

Folsan 5mg tablets are used to treat folic acid deficiency states that cannot be corrected through diet.The preparation is also used to prevent neural tube defects in newborns through preventive treatment of women at increased risk, such as women who have already given birth to a child with a neural tube defect or women who suffer from seizures and are being treated with antiepileptic drugs.Taking folic acid is also recommended with a wholesome diet.Another area of application is the treatment of increased concentrations of homocysteine in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.Homocysteinemia can only be treated with folic acid if a vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled out.

Active ingredients and ingredients

Each tablet contains 5 mg of folic acid as the active ingredient.The other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, macrogol 4000, magnesium stearate, corn starch, sucrose and stearic acid.This medicine contains lactose and sucrose.Please only take Folsan 5mg tablets after consulting your doctor if you know that you suffer from an intolerance to certain sugars.

Contraindications

Folsan 5mg tablets must not be taken if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.The preparation must also not be used if you have anemia due to impaired development of red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), as the increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid administration can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency.Because of the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, before treating anemia it is important to ensure that it is not due to a vitamin B12 deficiency.The cause of megaloblastic anemia must be clarified before therapy begins.

Dosage and application

Always take Folsan 5mg tablets exactly as your doctor has told you.Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for the treatment of folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine concentration in the blood is 1 to 3 tablets (corresponding to 5 to 15 mg of folic acid) per day, as needed.To prevent neural tube defects in newborns, it is recommended that pregnant women and women who want to have children take one tablet daily (corresponding to 5 mg folic acid).The tablets are taken whole with meals with sufficient liquid.

The duration of treatment for folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine concentration in the blood depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and depends on the clinical picture and, if necessary, on the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurements.To prevent neural tube defects in newborns, it is important that you start taking the tablets before pregnancy (preferably four weeks before).The treatment should then be continued for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

In women with seizure disorders (epilepsy) who are being treated with antiepileptic drugs, the concentration of this medicine in the blood must be carefully monitored.Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of Folsan 5mg tablets is too strong or too weak.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Folsan 5mg tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include allergic reactions, inflammatory skin redness, itching, spasm of the bronchi, nausea, circulatory failure due to an allergic reaction, sleep disorders, agitation, depression and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed seriously affects you or if you notice any side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

Storage

Keep Folsan 5mg tablets out of the reach and reach of children.The medicine must not be used after the expiry date stated on the carton or blister.Do not store the medicine above 30°C and keep the blister packs in the folding box.
