Instructions for use of folic acid 5mg tablets
Folic acid 5mg tablets contain the active ingredient folic acid, which belongs to the group of water-soluble vitamins.Folic acid is involved in many metabolic processes in the body, especially in the building of cells and the formation of red blood cells. This medicine is a vitamin and is used to treat folic acid deficiencies that cannot be corrected through diet, to prevent neural tube defects in newborns through preventative treatment in women at increased risk, and to treat elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.
No prescription is required for this product. However, in order to achieve the best possible treatment success, folic acid 5 mg must be used correctly.Keep this leaflet in case you want to read it again later.Ask your pharmacist if you need further information or advice. If your symptoms worsen or do not improve, you should definitely see a doctor.
Areas of application
This medicine is used to treat folic acid deficiency states that cannot be corrected through diet.It is also used to prevent neural tube defects in newborns through preventive treatment of women at increased risk, such as women who have already given birth to a child with a neural tube defect or women who suffer from seizures and are being treated with antiepileptic drugs. It is also used to treat elevated levels of homocysteine in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.Homocysteinemia can only be treated with folic acid if a vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled out.
Dosage and instructions for use
Always take folic acid 5mg tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for the treatment of folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine concentration in the blood is 1 to 3 tablets (corresponding to 5 to 15 mg of folic acid) per day, as needed. To prevent neural tube defects in newborns, it is recommended that pregnant women and women who want to have children take one tablet daily (corresponding to 5 mg folic acid).
The tablets are taken whole with meals with sufficient liquid. The duration of treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and depends on the clinical picture and, if necessary, on the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurements that are determined by the doctor for each patient. It is important that you start taking the tablets before pregnancy (preferably four weeks before) and continue treatment for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Side effects
Like all medicines, folic acid 5mg tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.Possible side effects include allergic reactions such as skin redness, itching, bronchospasm, nausea and circulatory collapse. At very high doses, sleep disorders, agitation and depression can occur. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed seriously affects you or if you notice any side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.
Contraindications
The medicine must not be taken if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.Folic acid must also not be taken if you have anemia due to impaired development of red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), as the increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid administration can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency.
