Area of application

Lactulose HEXAL syrup is a laxative that softens stools by drawing water into the intestines.This makes bowel movements easier.The product is used for constipation that cannot be adequately controlled by a high-fiber diet and other general measures, as well as for diseases that require easier bowel movements.It is also used to prevent and treat portocaval encephalopathy, i.e. disorders of brain function resulting from chronic liver diseases, especially liver cirrhosis.

Mode of action

The active ingredient lactulose is broken down by the bacteria found in the large intestine and changes the acid-base balance there.This stimulates the intestinal wall to move more, which makes it easier for the intestinal contents to be removed.The broken down components also draw water into the intestines, which softens the intestinal contents and increases in volume.This triggers a stretching stimulus on the intestinal wall and promotes bowel emptying.In addition, lactulose lowers the ammonia concentration in the blood by preventing the reabsorption of ammonia from the intestine into the bloodstream.

Lactulose HEXAL syrup contains the active ingredient lactulose.100 ml of the syrup contains 66.7 g of lactulose.Other ingredients include purified water and small amounts of other sugars such as fructose, galactose, lactose and epilactose.

Contraindications

Lactulose HEXAL syrup must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of the preparation.Even with an intestinal obstruction (ileus), apart from normal constipation, as well as with galactose intolerance, e.g.B. Galactosemia, or fructose intolerance, the product should not be used.If you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever that could indicate a serious illness, medical advice should be sought immediately.

Dosage

The dosage of lactulose HEXAL syrup depends on the area of application.For constipation and to ease bowel movements, the recommended dose for adults is 7.5-15 ml (equivalent to 5-10 g of lactulose) 1-2 times a day.Children should take 4.5-9 ml (equivalent to 3-6 g lactulose) 1-2 times a day.In portocaval encephalopathy, the dose is increased gradually to achieve 2-3 loose stools daily.It should always be taken as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Intake

Lactulose HEXAL syrup can be taken undiluted or diluted with water or warm drinks such as coffee or tea.It is also possible to stir it into yogurt, muesli or porridge.It can be taken regardless of meals.When taken once to treat constipation, taking it in the morning after breakfast has proven to be particularly well tolerated.

Patient information

Particular caution is required if the water and electrolyte balance is disturbed.If constipation symptoms persist for a long time, medical advice should be sought before starting therapy.Infants and small children should only receive the preparation after consulting a doctor.The medicine has no adverse effects on the ability to drive or use machines.

Pregnancy

There are no known harmful effects of lactulose when taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.Lactulose can therefore also be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Notes

The laxative effect can occur after 2-10 hours; if the amounts are insufficient, it can take 24-48 hours until the first bowel movement.While taking it, you should pay attention to a diet rich in fiber and sufficient fluid intake (at least 2 liters daily).Diabetics must take into account the synthesis-related content of digestible carbohydrates.No prescription is required for this product.
