Area of application

Lactulose HEXAL syrup is a laxative that softens stools by drawing water into the intestines.This makes bowel movements easier.The product is used for constipation that cannot be adequately controlled by a high-fiber diet and other general measures, as well as for diseases that require easier bowel movements.It is also used to prevent and treat portocaval encephalopathy, i.e. disorders of brain function resulting from chronic liver diseases, especially liver cirrhosis.

Mode of action

The active ingredient lactulose is broken down by the bacteria found in the large intestine and changes the acid-base balance there.This stimulates the intestinal wall to move more, making it easier for the intestinal contents to be removed.The high concentration of broken down components also draws water into the intestines, which softens the intestinal contents and increases in volume.The enlarged intestinal contents cause a stretching stimulus on the intestinal wall and thus trigger the reflex to empty the intestines.The active ingredient reduces the ammonia concentration in the blood by approx. 25-50% by preventing the reabsorption of ammonia from the intestine into the bloodstream.

Lactulose HEXAL syrup contains the active ingredient lactulose.100 ml of the syrup contains 66.7 g of lactulose.Other ingredients are purified water.Due to the manufacturing process, the syrup contains small amounts of other sugars such as fructose, galactose, lactose and epilactose.

Contraindications

Lactulose HEXAL syrup must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of the preparation.The product should also not be used if you have an intestinal obstruction (ileus), apart from normal constipation (constipation), if you have galactose intolerance, e.g. galactosemia, or if you have fructose intolerance.If you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting and fever that could indicate a serious illness, you should seek medical advice immediately.

Dosage

Always take lactulose HEXAL syrup exactly as directed.The dosage depends on the area of application.For constipation and to ease bowel movements, the recommended dose for adults is 7.5-15 ml (equivalent to 5-10 g of lactulose) 1-2 times a day and for children 4.5-9 ml (equivalent to 3-6 g of lactulose) 1-2 times a day.In portocaval encephalopathy, the dose should be increased slowly to achieve 2-3 loose stools daily.It can be taken regardless of meals.

Intake

Measure the dose you need using the measuring cup provided.The syrup can be mixed undiluted or diluted with water or warm drinks, e.g. coffee or tea, or stirred into yogurt, muesli or porridge and taken with these foods.If taken undiluted, the syrup should be swallowed directly and not kept in the mouth for any longer.

Patient information

Particular caution is required if the water and electrolyte balance is disturbed.If constipation persists for a long time, you should seek advice and examination from your doctor before starting therapy.The medicine has no adverse effects on perception, judgment or the ability to react.

Pregnancy

There are no known harmful effects of lactulose when taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.Lactulose can also be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Notes

The laxative effect can occur after 2-10 hours; if the amounts are insufficient, it can take 24-48 hours until the first bowel movement.While taking it, you should eat a diet rich in fiber to support the laxative effect.Make sure you drink enough fluids (at least 2 liters daily).For diabetics, the synthetic content of lactulose in digestible carbohydrates must be taken into account (100 ml contains a maximum of 17g = 1.4 BE).No prescription is required for this product.
