Glauber's salt sodium sulfate powder

Glauber's salt sodium sulfate powder is a saline laxative that is used for short-term use in cases of constipation and for emptying the intestines before diagnostic and therapeutic measures.The active ingredient sodium sulfate decahydrate draws water into the intestine, which softens the intestinal contents and exerts a stretching stimulus on the intestinal wall, which triggers the reflex to empty the intestines.

Composition

100 g of powder contains sodium sulfate decahydrate 100 g.This is equivalent to 1 g of sodium sulfate-10 water, which is equivalent to 440.86 mg of sodium sulfate anhydrous.

Areas of application

Glauber's salt sodium sulfate powder is used for short-term use for constipation and for emptying the intestines before operations or examinations.It is a mild laxative that helps with constipation.

Dosage and method of administration

The powder must be dissolved in water before taking.Adults should drink 10 to 20 g (approx. 2 to 4 teaspoons) of Glauber's salt sodium sulfate powder before going to bed.Children aged 6 and over should take half the dose, i.e. 5 to 10 g (approx. 1 to 2 teaspoons).

Contraindications

Glauber's salt sodium sulfate powder must not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients, in children under 6 years of age, in inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases, intestinal obstruction, heart failure, high blood pressure and fluid and salt balance disorders.Due to increased potassium losses, interactions with cardiac glycosides (digitalis, strophantin) may occur.

Side effects

When used as intended, there are currently no side effects described for Glaubersalz sodium sulfate powder.Chronic use can lead to edema, high blood pressure due to an increase in sodium, muscle weakness or heart problems due to loss of water and potassium.

Notes

Laxative medicines should only be used for a short time without a doctor's recommendation.Long-term use can lead to chronic constipation and/or other problems.Glauber's salt sodium sulfate powder is not suitable for weight loss.There may be medicines with which interactions occur.You should therefore generally tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment with a new medicine that you are already using.
