Lactulose AIWA® 670 mg/ml oral solution

Lactulose AIWA® contains a laxative known as lactulose.This laxative draws water into the intestines and softens the stool, making it easier for it to pass through the intestines.It is important to know that lactulose is not absorbed into the body.

Area of application

Lactulose AIWA® is used to treat constipation and to treat a specific liver disease, portocaval encephalopathy.In case of constipation, the remedy softens the stool and thus makes it easier to empty the intestines.In portocaval encephalopathy, it helps to improve brain function.

If your symptoms do not improve after three days of use or even worsen, you should consult a doctor.

Active ingredients / ingredients / ingredients

The solution contains lactulose as the active ingredient in a concentration of 670 mg per milliliter.It also contains small amounts of digestible carbohydrates, which, however, have little nutritional value.For example, 15 ml of syrup contains fructose, galactose and lactose, which corresponds to a maximum of 0.21 bread units (BE).

Contraindications

Lactulose AIWA® must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.Its use is also contraindicated in galactosemia, a genetic disorder in which galactose cannot be digested.The drug is also not suitable for acute inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, for intestinal obstructions (apart from normal constipation), for perforations or the risk of perforations in the gastrointestinal tract, and for unclear abdominal pain.

Dosage

Always take Lactulose AIWA® exactly as described in the package leaflet or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.The daily dose can be taken once or divided into up to three individual doses.

For constipation, the starting dose for adults and adolescents over 14 years of age is 15 to 45 ml, which corresponds to 10 to 30 g of lactulose.The maintenance dose is 15 to 30 ml, corresponding to 10 to 20 g of lactulose.For children between 7 and 14 years old, the starting dose is 15 ml (10 g lactulose) and the maintenance dose is 10 to 15 ml (7 to 10 g lactulose).Children aged 1 to 6 years initially receive 5 to 10 ml (3 to 7 g of lactulose).Newborns can receive up to 5 ml (up to 3 g of lactulose).

For portocaval encephalopathy, treatment begins with 30 to 50 ml three times a day, which corresponds to 60 to 100 g of lactulose.The dose should be adjusted to achieve two to three loose stools per day.The pH value of the stools should be between 5.0 and 5.5.

It can take 2 to 3 days for the desired effect to occur because lactulose is first broken down in the large intestine.An overdose can lead to diarrhea and abdominal pain.If you miss a dose, simply take the next dose at the usual time.Do not take a double dose if you forget to take a dose.

Intake

Swallow the solution quickly and do not hold it in your mouth.You can take the medicine undiluted or diluted in liquid.To do this, use the dosing aid provided.During treatment with laxatives you should drink enough fluids, about 2 liters per day, which is approximately 6 to 8 glasses.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking lactulose, especially if you suffer from gastrocardiac syndrome (Roemheld syndrome).If you experience symptoms such as meteorism or a feeling of bloating after use, stop treatment and consult your doctor.Long-term use of inappropriate doses or abuse can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalances.

Patients with portocaval encephalopathy should avoid concomitant use of other laxatives.Lactulose may contain traces of sugars, so you should seek medical advice before taking it if you have a sugar intolerance.

The medicine should not normally be given to young children and newborns as it may interfere with normal bowel emptying reflexes.The doctor may prescribe lactulose to a child, toddler or newborn under special conditions and will carefully monitor the treatment in these cases.

Lactulose has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
