Lactulose AIWA® 670 mg/ml oral solution
Lactulose AIWA® contains a laxative that acts as a laxative.The active ingredient lactulose draws water into the intestines, making the stool softer and easier to pass through the intestines.The body does not absorb lactulose.
Area of application
Lactulose AIWA® is used to treat constipation and to treat a specific liver disease, portocaval encephalopathy.No prescription is required for this product.

1 ml Lactulose AIWA® solution contains 670 mg lactulose.In addition, the preparation contains the following excipients: 27 mg D-tagatose, 67 mg epilactose, 7 mg fructose, 100 mg galactose, 67 mg lactose, water for injections and 0.014 BE total carbohydrates.
Contraindications
The medicine must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients.The preparation must also not be used in the case of galactosemia, an acute inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, in the case of intestinal obstructions other than normal constipation, perforations or the risk of perforations in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in the case of abdominal pain of unknown origin.
Dosage
Always take the medicine exactly as described or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.Doses should be taken at the same time each day, either once daily or divided into up to three doses per day.
For constipation, the recommended starting dose for adults and adolescents over 14 years of age is 15 to 45 ml, equivalent to 10 to 30 g of lactulose.The maintenance dose is 15 to 30 ml, corresponding to 10 to 20 g of lactulose.For children between 7 and 14 years of age, the starting dose is 15 ml, equivalent to 10 g of lactulose, and the maintenance dose is 10 to 15 ml, equivalent to 7 to 10 g of lactulose.Children between 1 and 6 years of age receive an initial dose of 5 to 10 ml, equivalent to 3 to 7 g of lactulose.Newborns can receive up to 5 ml, equivalent to up to 3 g of lactulose.
In portocaval encephalopathy, the initial dose is 30 to 50 ml three times a day, corresponding to 60 to 100 g of lactulose.The dose should be adjusted to achieve 2 to 3 loose stools per day and the pH of the stools is between 5.0 and 5.5.
If you take more than you should, you may experience diarrhea and stomach pain.In this case you should contact your doctor or pharmacist.If you miss a dose, simply take the next dose at the usual time.Do not take a double dose if you forget to take a dose.
Intake
Swallow the medicine quickly and do not keep it in your mouth.You can take it undiluted or diluted in liquid.Use the dosing aid provided.During treatment with laxatives you should drink enough fluids, around 2 liters per day, equivalent to 6 to 8 glasses.
Patient information
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking lactulose.If you suffer from gastrocardiac syndrome, tell your doctor before taking it.If you experience symptoms such as meteorism or a feeling of bloating, you should stop treatment and consult your doctor.Long-term use of inappropriate doses or abuse can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalances.Patients with portocaval encephalopathy should avoid other laxatives and not use lactulose for more than two weeks without medical advice.
Lactulose may contain traces of sugars.If you have an intolerance to certain sugars, seek medical advice before taking.Children should not normally be given the medicine as it may interfere with normal bowel emptying reflexes.The doctor may prescribe lactulose to a child under special conditions and will carefully monitor the treatment.
Lactulose has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
Notes
Due to the manufacturing process, this medicine contains small amounts of digestible carbohydrates that have almost no nutritional value.Nevertheless, 15 ml of syrup contains digestible carbohydrates such as fructose, galactose and lactose, corresponding to a maximum of 0.21 BE.Higher doses may be required in the treatment of portocaval encephalopathy, which may require adjustment of your antidiabetic medication.
Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the package.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
