Lactulose AIWA® 670 mg/ml oral solution

Lactulose AIWA® contains the active ingredient lactulose, which acts as a laxative, i.e. a laxative.Lactulose draws water into the intestines and softens the stool, making it easier for it to pass through the intestines.The active ingredient is not absorbed into the body.

Areas of application

Lactulose AIWA® is used to treat constipation and to treat a specific liver disease, portocaval encephalopathy.In the case of constipation, lactulose softens the stool and makes it easier to empty the intestines.In portocaval encephalopathy, it helps improve brain function by reducing the formation of ammonia in the intestines.

Active ingredients and ingredients

Lactulose AIWA® solution contains the active ingredient lactulose in a concentration of 670 mg per milliliter.There are no other ingredients included.Due to the manufacturing process, the syrup contains small amounts of digestible carbohydrates, which, however, are only absorbed into the body from the intestine to a relatively small extent and therefore have almost no nutritional value.15 ml of syrup contains digestible carbohydrates such as fructose (fruit sugar), galactose and lactose (milk sugar), which corresponds to a maximum of 0.21 bread units (BE).

Contraindications

Lactulose AIWA® must not be taken if you are allergic to lactulose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.The medicine must also not be used in cases of galactosemia, a serious genetic disorder in which galactose cannot be digested.Furthermore, Lactulose AIWA® should not be taken in the case of acute inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, intestinal obstructions (apart from normal constipation), perforations or the risk of perforations in the gastrointestinal tract, and abdominal pain of unknown cause.

Dosage

Always take Lactulose AIWA® exactly as described in the package leaflet or after consulting your doctor or pharmacist.The dose can be taken once a day, for example with breakfast, or divided into up to three doses per day.

For constipation, the recommended starting dose for adults and adolescents over 14 years of age is 15 to 45 ml, equivalent to 10 to 30 g of lactulose.The maintenance dose is 15 to 30 ml, corresponding to 10 to 20 g of lactulose.For children between 7 and 14 years of age, the starting dose is 15 ml, equivalent to 10 g of lactulose, and the maintenance dose is 10 to 15 ml, equivalent to 7 to 10 g of lactulose.Children between 1 and 6 years of age receive an initial dose of 5 to 10 ml, equivalent to 3 to 7 g of lactulose.Newborns can receive up to 5 ml, equivalent to up to 3 g of lactulose.

In portocaval encephalopathy, the starting dose is 30 to 50 ml, equivalent to 60 to 100 g of lactulose, three times a day.The dose should be adjusted to achieve 2 to 3 loose stools per day.The pH value of the stools should be between 5.0 and 5.5.

It can take 2 to 3 days for the desired effect to occur because lactulose is first broken down in the large intestine.The daily dose should be taken in one portion at breakfast.There are no specific dosage recommendations for older patients or patients with kidney or liver insufficiency.The safety and effectiveness in children aged 0 to 18 years have not been established.

Intake

Swallow Lactulose AIWA® quickly and do not keep it in your mouth.You can take the syrup undiluted or diluted in liquid.To do this, use the dosing aid provided.During treatment with laxatives you should drink enough fluids, around 2 liters per day, equivalent to 6 to 8 glasses.

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Lactulose AIWA®.Tell your doctor if you have gastrocardiac syndrome (Roemheld syndrome).If you experience symptoms such as meteorism or a feeling of bloating, you should stop treatment and consult your doctor.Long-term use of inappropriate doses or abuse can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalances.Patients with portocaval encephalopathy should avoid concomitant use of other laxatives.Lactulose may contain traces of sugars, so if you have a known intolerance to certain sugars, you should seek medical advice before taking it.

Lactulose AIWA® should not normally be given to children as it may interfere with normal bowel emptying reflexes. The doctor may prescribe lactulose to a child, toddler or newborn under special conditions and will carefully monitor the treatment in these cases.

Lactulose has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.

If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking Lactulose AIWA®.

Notes

Please do not use Lactulose AIWA® after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.
