What are Dulcolax® dragées?

Dulcolax® dragées are a laxative in the form of enteric-coated tablets.They are used to gently relieve constipation and are also helpful for diseases that require easier bowel movements.They can also be used before medical procedures or diagnostic measures to ensure bowel emptying.

Constipation can have various causes, such as lack of exercise, intolerable food, stress or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.It is often accompanied by abdominal cramps and discomfort, which can affect quality of life.Thanks to the active ingredient bisacodyl, Dulcolax® helps to relieve constipation in a predictable and tolerable manner.The effects begin 6 to 12 hours after ingestion.If the dragées are taken in the evening, this ensures bowel evacuation the next morning.

Dulcolax® dragées - double effect against constipation

Dulcolax® dragées work against constipation in two ways.On the one hand, the fluid content in the intestine is increased, which improves stool consistency and makes stool easier to empty.On the other hand, the muscles of the large intestine are activated, which stimulates intestinal movements and effectively relieves constipation.

Another advantage is the enteric coating of the dragées, which ensures that the active ingredient bisacodyl arrives and works exactly where it is needed: in the large intestine.There, bisacodyl is converted into the substance BHPM by intestinal bacteria and develops its laxative effect.It inhibits the transport of water and sodium from the stool into the blood, ensures that the intestines are supplied with water and electrolytes and thus facilitates bowel emptying.

Dulcolax® dragées contain the active ingredient bisacodyl.One gastro-resistant tablet (dragée) contains 5 mg bisacodyl.The other ingredients are Arabic gum, carnauba wax, dyes quinoline yellow (E 104), yellow orange S (E 110) and titanium dioxide (E 171), glycerol, lactose monohydrate (milk sugar), macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate, corn starch, methacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate copolymer (1:1), methacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate copolymer (1:2),virgin castor oil, modified starch (oxidized corn starch), sucrose (sugar), talc and bleached wax.

Area of application

Dulcolax® dragées are suitable for the short-term treatment of constipation.Constipation can also manifest itself with symptoms such as stomach pain, stomach ache or stomach cramps.

Mode of action

Dulcolax® dragées safely dissolve constipation overnight.The effect occurs in 6 to 12 hours and can therefore be planned.Due to the coating, the dragées only develop their effect in the large intestine and stimulate the natural intestinal movement there.

Contraindications

If you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the ingredients, this product should not be used.It is not suitable for children under 2 years.If you have abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, or are lactose or sucrose intolerance, the dragées must not be taken.The product should not be used if the water or mineral balance is disturbed.

Dosage

If necessary, Dulcolax® dragées can be taken whole with liquid, ideally in the evening before going to bed.Adults can take 1 or 2 tablets once a day, children aged 2 to 10 years can take 1 tablet once a day.The dose should not be exceeded to avoid an overdose.

Intake

Take the tablets whole with sufficient liquid, preferably a glass of water, but no milk.

Patient information

Laxatives should only be taken for a short time without medical advice.If you have chronic constipation, you should ask your doctor for advice before taking it.Increased fluid loss can lead to dehydration, which in certain circumstances can have adverse health effects.In such cases, taking the drug should be interrupted and only continued under medical supervision.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.Since its introduction, no undesirable or harmful effects during pregnancy have been reported.Studies on use during pregnancy have not been conducted.Therefore, like all medicines, the tablets should only be used during pregnancy after consulting your doctor.It has been shown that the active ingredient does not pass into breast milk. The dragées can therefore be used during breastfeeding.

Notes

Dulcolax® dragées contain lactose, sucrose and the yellow-orange S dye. They do not contribute to weight loss.Different laxatives should not be used at the same time as this may cause or increase side effects in the gastrointestinal tract.The maximum daily dose of 2 tablets for adults and 1 tablet for children aged 2 to 10 years should not be exceeded.Please note the package leaflet!
