What are Dulcolax® dragées?

Dulcolax® dragées are a laxative in the form of enteric-coated tablets.They are used to gently relieve constipation and for diseases that lead to stool blockages and require easier evacuation of stools.They can also be taken before treatment measures, operations and diagnostic measures for bowel emptying.

Constipation can have various causes, such as lack of exercise, intolerable food, stress or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with narrowing of the intestines.It is often accompanied by abdominal cramps and discomfort, which can severely impact the quality of life.

Thanks to the active ingredient bisacodyl, Dulcolax® helps to gently relieve constipation in a predictable and tolerable way.The easy handling makes Dulcolax® dragées a reliable companion in everyday life.Its effects begin 6 to 12 hours after ingestion.If taken in the evening, they ensure a relaxed and good start to the day.

Dulcolax® dragées - double effect against constipation

Dulcolax® dragées work against constipation in two ways.Firstly, the lack of fluid in the intestines is eliminated, the consistency of the stool is improved and evacuation is made easier.Secondly, the muscles of the colon are activated and intestinal movements are stimulated, which leads to an effective solution to constipation and rapid relief from symptoms such as abdominal cramps.

Another advantage is the coating of the Dulcolax® dragées, which is resistant to small intestinal juice and gastric juice.This ensures that the active ingredient bisacodyl arrives and works exactly where it is supposed to work: in the large intestine.There the bisacodyl is converted into the substance BHPM by intestinal bacteria and can therefore develop its laxative effect.It inhibits the transport of water and sodium from the stool into the blood and ensures that the intestines are supplied with water and electrolytes.

This makes the stool softer and the intestinal muscles can resume their own movement.The softening of the stool enables easier emptying of the intestines and relieves constipation - without putting unnecessary strain on the body.

How are Dulcolax® dragées used?

Dulcolax® dragées can be taken by adults and children aged 2 and over.Use in children and pregnant women should be carried out after medical consultation.In addition, Dulcolax® dragées are also suitable for taking while breastfeeding, as they have been proven to have no influence on breast milk.

The dosage for adults and children aged 10 and over is 1 to 2 tablets as required, for children aged 2 to 10 years 1 tablet.It is taken once daily in the evening or morning, with the onset of effects occurring after 6 to 12 hours.The dragées should be taken whole and with plenty of liquid.

Taking it in the evening causes the bowel to empty after around 10 to 12 hours.When used in the morning on an empty stomach, the effect occurs after approx. 6 hours.Please follow the instructions in the package leaflet and your doctor or pharmacist regarding use.Disturbances of the electrolyte balance or habituation effects are not to be expected if taken over a long period of time and as directed.

Instructions for taking

Dulcolax® dragées should not be taken daily or for a long period of time unless a doctor is consulted or the cause of the constipation is unclear.The dragées contain lactose, sucrose and yellow orange S and do not contribute to weight loss.Different laxatives should not be used at the same time as this may cause or increase side effects in the gastrointestinal tract.

The maximum daily dose of 2 tablets for adults and 1 tablet for children aged 2 to 10 years should not be exceeded.Please note the package leaflet.The simultaneous use of diuretics or corticosteroids can increase the risk of electrolyte imbalances if Dulcolax® dragées are used excessively.

When should Dulcolax® dragées not be taken?

Dulcolax® dragées must not be taken if you are allergic to bisacodyl, yellow orange S, lactose, sucrose or any of the other ingredients.They should also not be used if you have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, which could indicate a serious intestinal disease.Likewise for illnesses that are associated with a disturbed water and mineral salt balance, as well as for children under 2 years of age.

What side effects can occur when using Dulcolax® dragées?

As with taking other laxatives and medicines, using Dulcolax® dragées as intended can cause unwanted side effects.Possible side effects include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blood in the stool, discomfort in the abdominal and intestinal area, hypersensitivity reactions, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, short-term circulatory collapse, increased loss of water and severe allergic reactions.

Please do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack or outer packaging.The expiry date refers to the last day of the specified month.

Active ingredients contained in Dulcolax® dragées

Active ingredient per 1 tablet: 5 mg bisacodyl.Other ingredients are Arabic gum, carnauba wax, quinoline yellow, yellow orange S, titanium dioxide, glycerol, lactose monohydrate, macrogol 6000, magnesium stearate, corn starch, methacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate copolymer (1:1), methacrylic acid-methyl methacrylate copolymer (1:2), native castor oil, partially oxidized corn starch, sucrose, talc and bleachedwax.

Area of application

Dulcolax® dragées are used short-term for intestinal sluggishness and constipation (constipation), for diseases that require easier bowel emptying and for preparation before operations and measures to detect diseases (diagnostic procedures).Constipation can also manifest itself with symptoms such as stomach pain, stomach ache or stomach cramps.

Mode of action

Dulcolax® dragées inhibit sodium and water absorption from the intestinal lumen and increase the release of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen.This leads to an increase in the volume of the stool and thus reflexively stimulates the intestinal movement.

Contraindications

If you are known to be hypersensitive to any of the above ingredients, the product should not be used.The product should not be taken with milk or other substances that affect stomach acid, otherwise the effect may be impaired.This medication must not be used in cases of intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal pain that requires surgical treatment (such as acute appendicitis), and in children under 2 years of age.The medication should also not be used in acute gastrointestinal diseases or if there are water and mineral imbalances.

Dosage

The Dulcolax® dragées should preferably be taken in the evening before going to bed so that they can fully develop their effect overnight (onset of effect after 6 - 12 hours).The dosage for children aged 2 and over is 1 Dulcolax® dragée/day, adults and children aged 10 and over take 1 to 2 Dulcolax® dragées/day.It should be taken whole with plenty of liquid (preferably a glass of water, but not milk).

Take the tablets whole with sufficient liquid (preferably a glass of water, but no milk).

Patient information

Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the medicine.Laxatives should only be taken for a short time without medical advice.If you have chronic constipation, you should ask your doctor for advice before taking it.Increased fluid loss can lead to dehydration.This can have harmful effects in certain circumstances (e.g. in patients with impaired kidney function or in the elderly).In such cases, taking the drug should be interrupted and only continued under medical supervision.

Patients reported blood in their stools, which were generally described as mild and resolved on their own.Dizziness or brief attacks of loss of consciousness (syncope) have been reported in patients taking this medicine.According to the corresponding case reports, these are probably syncope, which can be traced back either to the laxation process itself, to the pressing, or to circulatory reactions due to abdominal pain.

The tablets must not be used in children under 2 years of age.In children, the tablets should only be used on medical instructions.

No studies on the effect on the ability to drive and use machines have been conducted.Please note that side effects may occur that could theoretically affect driving and operating machines.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Since its introduction, no undesirable or harmful effects during pregnancy have been reported.Studies on use during pregnancy have not been conducted.Therefore, like all medicines, the tablets should only be used during pregnancy after consulting your doctor.

It has been shown that the active ingredient does not pass into breast milk.The dragees can therefore be used during breastfeeding.

Notes

Dulcolax® dragées are very small and can therefore be easily swallowed.The acid-resistant special coating of the Dulcolax® dragées ensures that the active ingredient bisacodyl is only released in the large intestine - the desired site of action.Attention: Laxatives are not suitable for weight loss.
